Hello, I'm currently having a rating of 1500, and 13yrs old, is it possible for me to become a NM/IM/GM before I turn 18?

You are 13 rated 1500
18 is 5 years from now
CM = 2200 that is +700, or +140 / year
FM = 2300 that is +800, or +160 / year
IM = 2400 that is +900, or +180 / year
GM = 2500 that is +1000, or +200 / year
So the question is, what progress per year you can sustain.
Here is an example of a rating progress chart:

So yes, it is possible, but it requires a lot of work.

A rating of 1500 is a decent start, and pretty impressive for your age! Titles are unrealistic for most people, but if aspiring to one motivates you to work hard, then that's good. If you're serious in your ambition, I'd advise investing in a coach. Good luck happy.png

im 2500 lichess and 13 years old and my coach says GM will be really hard to get. so i think at 1500 chess.com it would be way harder.

i can give you book recommendations that i got at your rating if you want.

Genuine question, how are you 2000 rapid but only 1400 FIDE? I know there's normally a gap of around 200-300, but it's supposed to be easier for u18s to gain OTB rating quickly because you get a higher K-factor in rating calculations

BigChessplayer665

Yes 100%

rapid is like 1700 blitz (around 1400-1600 fida)

Hense high rapid rating by low fida rating(2100 blitz in comparison is about 1700-2200 usually )

If you have the ability it may be possible. If everyone could accomplish that there would be millions with an IM or GM title. FIDE will somehow enable that very scenario.

NM definitely. but IM and GM will be really difficult. still possible though.

IM/GM is it possible atleast if i work hard daily for 3-4hrs atleast when my age becomes 20-22?

I would say if you are genuinely intuitive and have a long time interest in the game, it should be possible to become a GM at some point, (considering your age), however getting to 2200 or so is the hard part, it will take a long while to reach, and there will be many times where you feel that your goal is out of your reach, but you must persevere....these days, once kids manage to reach 2200, they seem to skyrocket into 2400-2500s in a matter of a year or two......all the best!

++ Here is a list of 20 books from a player who did become GM by them:

Well I agree that that is what you would naturally be compelled to think, and that is what was actually true till about 5-10 years ago, but now with the huge increase in resources these days, kids over 2200 mostly speed though the open tourneys, winning a lot of quick rating points by upsetting strong players, and most of the children, at least here in India and Asia are simply underrated......once they break through the barrier facing the underrated 1800's and 1900's, they get to face stronger players, who are not really underrated, especially abroad, and start showing their true colors, which is why evidence will show you that unlike the past, 2200-2500 is probably a smooth and easy journey compared to let's say 1200-2200 which from my personal experience is a harsh road.....You legit face these 11 year old kids who started learning chess like a year or two back, they'll probably be like 1400 OTB (should actually be 1800 or so, but that's what being vastly underrated means), but they will be beating these 1900's and 2000's twice or thrice more often than they are expected to......but they face other kids like them, and will suffer some losses, this leads to a trap like effect, where these kids slowly rise and take a good while and efforts to go past 2000 or 2200, while the majority are trapped in circles between say 1600-2000......

Look at real rating progress graphs, e.g.
https://ratings.fide.com/profile/44599790/chart
It gets harder as they get higher.
K = 40 for all players until the end of the year of their 18th birthday,
as long as their rating remains under 2300.
K = 20 as long as a player's rating remains under 2400.
K = 10 once a player's published rating has reached 2400 and remains at that level subsequently, even if the rating drops below 2400.

Yes, it's absolutely possible, but it will require dedication, hard work and strategic planning.
