Well Now that all of you had your say.
It seems to me that nobody won this match.
Bobby made next to the last moves to the game he was playing. He castled and went to Iceland as a full citizen.
Finally he made his last move. Death mated him and he died.
It would have been nice if the US Government had said, "Hey, yeah, we have sanctions against Yugoslavia, but go ahead and play chess...because, you were the World Champion, man. You were the best and we want to see you play again. We support you, because you are the best chess player to ever come out of our country. Go Bobby!"
That would have been better than that form letter telling him he can't play because we don't want anyone engaging in "business" with Yugoslavia. Come on. That chess match was outside of the regular world, and everyone wanted to see him play again.
After getting that letter...sure, I can see him saying "If you are making me into an outlaw for playing chess, then I sure as heck ain't gonna give you a share of my winnings."
As for everything else, all I can say is this: I applaud Iceland...for stepping in when they did. Thank you Iceland!
I agree entirely!
