Accidentally castling

Anyone having a problem with accidentally click-moving should go to Home -> Settings -> Board and Pieces and change Move Method to Drag Pieces Only. They added this option a couple of weeks ago.

THANK YOU! Just had this happen, this is really helpful as a solution.

Yeah, I've done this over a dozen times accidentally in blitz games; I'll be considering a king move, then hastily change my mind and select the rook. I agree that selecting king then clicking rook should NOT castle, but I get that it is probably more intuitive, especially for newer players. And I do greatly appreciate chess.com adding drag only (even though I prefer having both move methods enabled).

It happens because of click to move; you have the king selected, then you change your mind, click the rook to move it and... CASTLE!!!! WHAAAAT? Yes, that. Happened today 3 games in a row. It's horrible.

Gymstar

 its never happened to me

Many things never happened to you, this doesn't mean they're not a risk.

Perhaps you were lucky; more likely, you don't use to click pieces while thinking and thus minimize your chances to do smth wrong.

It happens so often when I play on my mobile device. I'll move the king, oh no wait, I'll move the rook... And tada, the game castles, instant loose. This feature makes absolutely no sense to me

Pretty much, every time I castled, it was by accident! Seriously! ♟

Chess.com PLEASE fix this. Some of us REALLY want a Setting to choose how to castle. I suggest:

1. Move King two squares

2. Click on King then click on Rook (or drag King to Rook)

3. Either 1 or 2 (the default and only current option).

Chess.com please fix.

No need to even add options. The only way to castle should be to move the king two squares  mimicking the OTB rules. Just having the option of "click king, click rook" will cause mistakes to happen because the normal action, "click on piece to select", is superseded by "click on rook to castle", with no warning to the user (and warnings would be impractical in fast time formats)

It really does need fixing - it's maddening when it happens, and I don't want to turn on "confirm every move" for a move I make once per game max (less than that in some of the Sicilian variations I play)

I accidentally castle all the time as well. Please remove the tap-King-tap-Rook castle or build a setting that allows us to remove this/choose our castling rules. Thank you

I’ve been playing for over ten years on this site and have never accidentally castled. Stop clicking so many things.

from what i understand its just a simple mouse slip issue

It's more than a mouse slip.

They first click on the king intending to castle. Then they change their mind and want to move the rook. When they click on the rook, the castle move occurs.

Just saw Gothamchess do it in a vod: https://youtu.be/5PQJTc3IKfE?t=284

I know this was four years ago, but just to clarify for everyone who doesn't understand the issue:

If you're in a situation where castling is legal, and you click on the king to castle or move it, and then change your mind and decide to move the rook, chess.com will automatically castle for you on that side, even though you didn't make the usual castling move (which is moving the king two squares towards the rook). This can happen with either short castle or long castle. This is a stupid feature of the website that has lost me a few games, and I wish they would fix it because I don't want to have to remember to unselect the king every time before I move the rook.

Happened to me in my last game. Was contemplating short castling, but then decided to move my rook on a8 and it long castled.

this happens to me fairly often and it drives me nuts. I tend to click on random pieces when i'm thinking of a move (also because I have "show legal moves" turned on which helps me as i've only been here since Feb), sometimes it happens to be the king that I randomly click and then when I decide to move my rook, it castles instead. My fault entirely for being so trigger happy with my mouse but it's given me some seriously bad positions, somehow I always accidentally castle to the worst side when this happens.
