Chess has moves,draws,stalemate,mate,check,tactics,strategys so on...

Well, that's pretty pessimistic, surely it's more than that.  I don't use it to feel clever or productive.  I think it's intentionally harsh in order to make it's point poignant.

I like goldendog's posts a lot on this subject.  They are in touch with reality.

I agree, his point of view seems very objective.   I do disagree with him though on how little art there is -- I believe it's fully the art, for example, painting can be, it's just that chess is an esoteric art form.

He's correct that moves optically aren't the art, once you learn chess, it's it's own language.  When a rook moves 3 squares to the left there is no art spatially or optically, but of course it isn't a painting.  It's the subtext, it's the unspoken conversation between the players and pieces themselves -- it's certainly esoteric -- it's certainly art.

And just like better known art forms it can be a grand expression for the artist, or a joy to behold for a spectator.

noob, its not art. its skills and mental ability, dont try to turn it into somthing fruity. its all about skills and intellegence noob. its about mental thinking ability and pwning noobs like u who think they are some kind of artist. later noob

Exactly! I agree

if i spent all the time on my business and no time on my chess i will be financially much better off but it will feel as if I have lost a good good friend...I am not emotianlly ready for such departure :-) and a nice site like this isnt making it easier :-)

The problem is that my brain cant just think about work. and although there is many challenges in my work there is also sometimes repetition (and administration) and it will kill me if I cant play chess.

a lot of my social activity is also at the chess club or tournaments on weekends or so. it is only an addiction when it badly influences your relationships around you, but you can use it positively by getting your kids involved (nice time to spent with your kids), meeting new people etc.

yes, chess is part of my lifestyle.

tell the pshyciatrist that she can use chess to treat people - dont they learn stuff like this in pshycology nowadays?

I dont think that chess hasnt contributed to society as you cant say that music or art or sport hasnt contributed. These things bring people more together than governments and politics. I mean we love the Russians for their chess and ballet but not for the supply of weapons during the cold war (and the same is true for various other governments).

Actually I would say that someone without a love for chess, music, or the other things i mentioned above, is a very poorer man.

however, whether anything on this earth has eternal value, you must work out for yourself in this life - but thats beside the point of this thread.

Licensed?  A license to do what? Talk shit and make assumptions about people they know nothing about?  A mans actions don't equal the sum of his psychological parts.

She's actually right, Chess is just a game.  Its just that it means so much more to you than that so it pisses you off to hear people actually say it.  Your reasons are your own.

Chess sort of resembles life in a lot of ways.  One big difference is that Chess has clearly defined rules, life does not, it sort of has codes and ethics instead which can all be broken.

A psychologist would probably try and tell you that you have no control over your own life and the world around you so you hide on your Chessboard.

Problem with non-Chess players is they just don't get it.  They'll never understand why we play coz neither will we so how could they?

Well, with this interpretation of chess, it is not surprizing that Fischer's own mind crushed eventually.

I would have to agree with your theories on chess.  I to would be more financially better off but emotionally stunted. Yes my family and man would get more out of me but it would be negative attention not the quality they get now. Playing a game of chess helps me to relax and keeps me on the edge all at the same time. At times when i am on a real good roll i don't think much can top the feelings you get.

I recently deleted my account and was totally devastated.  I felt like i had lost my right hand.  I was on to admin within no time asking them to restore it back.

Funny.

Chess is just a game. Being a psychologist is just a job. Fermat's Last Theorem is just a puzzle. Landing on the moon is just a trip. Literature is just a hobby.

Where have you been?  The Chinese already did that a long time ago.

The chinese have done that, but the others have not ;)

Gotta say, I'm glad that life at least appears to have more significance than the troubles of getting from point A to point B.

The OP troll certainly got a lot of mileage out of such a silly post.

Yeah, it's just a game. Get over it.
