I’m not sure JatinStrikes If you understand the difference between the “match “ and the “game”. But let’s OP to clarify. What happened after Carlsen vs Niemann game was definitely very controversial and influential to the chess world but speaking about match, i think that Karpov vs Korchnoi was most famous controversy.

I think every world championship match before fide took over was controversial to some extent. Champions targeted challengers that were not a threat and putting monetary obstacles in front of anyone that was a threat. As for tournaments to determine a world champion? Zurich 1953 definitely qualifies. The Russians did everything they could to prevent Reshevky from winning.
