Hello,

I am planning to buy the FIDE online arena subscription and gain one of the following titles: AFM, ACM, AIM, AGM.

I am confident to get at least ACM and my concern is if it works after you stop your subscription. When it gets FIDE recognized, and I cancel the subscription, will I lose my title?

Best regards

The Arena online chess service is offered by a company working with FIDE.

The "titles" aren't the same as titles granted by FIDE for over the board play and don't count for much of anything in the real world. They don't count towards getting a real over the board title.

I think you get a certificate if you pay for it.

From their site:

  • Once you claimed it and paid the FIDE fee, you will have this title for life. It will reflect on your FIDE profile and Arena pages as well as at the OTB tournaments.
  • You will also get an official FIDE certificate over email.

FIDE Titles of the lower rating band are valid for life, however acquirement of a higher title described in 1.1 replaces any title reference of a lower status.

Why should you care what happens after you cancel your subscription to FIDE arena?

These A"something" titles may be printed at your FIDE profile and make you feel good, but they are completely worthless outside FIDE Arena.

Do they get free dimond membership

Nope, all these titles are a joke. FIDE came up with them to make the failures feel a little less insignificant.

Can I ask how to get them for free?

Being ~1100 on Chess.com puts you in the top ~10% of online chess players.
Being ~1400 on Chess.com puts you in the top ~5% of online chess players.
Being ~1700 on Chess.com puts you in the top ~1% of online chess players.
FOA is actually even more competitive than Chess.com because only people who believe they can earn a title actually register there. (Rating -200 deflation across FOA website, top player there is 2700, top player on Chess.com is 3300-3400)

Sure, it's probably just a way for FIDE to generate money, but to say the titles are empty and invalid is inaccurate. Less prestigious than OTB titles? Absolutely.

Also, including the certificate(s) on your resume will certainly impress people who do not play chess. Saying that you're an "Arena Candidate Master" will certainly look more accomplished to a person who does not play Chess than just saying "I love to play chess"

Maybe that final point is the problem that people have with it. People who are not in the top 0.1% can get some recognition for their time playing, and that idea seems to anger some people in Chess for some reason.

No it isnt really. Its much lower because site has barely any players and its filled with bots that are trying to impersonate real people. Its a business fail of the year. If it wasnt like that with their connection to FIDE ratings they could wipe chess.com from the market easily.

Those aren't FIDE titles, they're online titles

They are actually FIDE titles. Online and worth less than toilet paper but still. You can see them on your FIDE profile along with the regular ratings.
Just another way for FIDE to milk insecure people.
