Are there really as many players online at a given time or playing passively (daily) as presented?

To ask such a question implies that Chess.com is either lying or unable to do math.

No no no. I appreciate your directness though. I'm just asking, I suppose, is chess really popular? Not just on chess.com but in general, but using this site as maybe a point of reference. o

Here is a news article with stats from last year.

https://www.chess.com/es/news/view/el-2016-para-chess-com-4506

Lots of blitz games!

For or some reason they have the Spanish version of the post linked into the news page but the image is in English.

urk
Seven and a half billion
Far too many

triggerlips

Lots of them will be facebook people just playing a social game. Calling them chess players is a bit of a loose discription

Let's chew on some of those numbers:

phpVx6taE.jpeg

/ 1.9 million forum posts and comments. How many of those were double posts?

// With 425 million divided by 11 million= 37, it appears that they are using the word "daily" in their unique definition of the word-- "daily" meaning corrspondence style chess (games that allow 24 hours or more per move), as opposed to the normal definition of "daily" as something that happens every day.

/// 3,082,460 new signups give an average of 8,445 new players every day. It would seem prudent to rewrite the Help section or make it more prominent. How about running an automated Google search of the site when someone is about to post a forum question to see if that question has been asked previously?

Possibly a surprise to yo, but yes I can indeed us Google. I apologize if my initial query was lacking clarity. I don't so much care about the stats as, well, what do the public and/or players feel about the popularity of chess? Do they feel it is a classic game appreciated by all in some capacity or a niche form of entertainment for enthusiasts only? I seek more personal opinions, really.

There's no reason to question anything about Chess.com.

Touché.
