Huh? Does that happen to you?
Addiction and Neuroses in chess players!

By the way this forum is written by someone who is up at three in the morning, in her nightdress, sipping coffee to help her stay awake, and what is she doing ... she's playing chess of course! Because what else in life beats the adrenaline rush and euphoria of winning a difficult game!

For me there is no chance that my chess creates some neurosis or something even encourages positive energy to me, is exactly the kind of game of chess is very close to sports games, and if you do not know the sport can bear defeat of better than yourself, then do not start to play, is it then really can not you jam neurosis, if someone starts to seriously deal with chess and not for fun then apply the principles that apply to all other sports, I deal with judo, here's a little more fifty years and imagine what it would mean if we for example defeat creates a neurosis or some complex vice versa on me, pointing out my mistakes and shortcomings, and encourages me to work harder and commitment to what we do, but specifically for chess, the menu is on fun, and do not encumber me than me relax, greeting. ..................................

The same criteria as for any addiction. Is it interfering with your ability to get on with your life? If you're up at three playing chess and have to be at work at eight, then there's a problem. If you can sleep until noon the next day, then it's a lifestyle choice. If chess is interfering with, or is being used as a substitute for, relationships; then you have a problem. Of course if you're using chess as a less damaging form of addiction than substance abuse or gambling, then maybe it's OK as a short term solution. Long term of course it's a lot healthier to get some help and find out what the root causes are and try to change. More of my $.02 from the man with an endless supply of pennies. Not that I'm addicted to the forums or anything...

There as you say healthy and unhealthy addictions, but when the need to constantly play chess stops us from being involved in other activities, then it's time to assess why we are doing it, and what is happening here with us!

It's all about winning and losing , it gives you a high , then a low involving differnt chemicals of the brain like in gambling, you know you have to walk away , but you you don't.

For my own part I would ruin my days playing late evenings, or at night, not only because its timeconsuming in itself, but also robbing me of sleep because of heigtened levels of stresshormones. Maybe other people react different? Also, playing with little sleep reduces my capability and therby my rating(which isnt too high enyway;-)) to go down. So for me such habits are counterproductive.Im no neurosis expert, but just noticing these consequences might create an agenda to resolve the issue:-)
Does our obsession with our statistics and win and loss record indicate the presence of a severe neuroses? Also, at what stage do we need to seek help with our chess addiction?
