Anyways, I don't think it's quite as bad as it used to be.

I couldn't disagree more.

I remember posting in a forum about 6 months ago that in 5 years here i had only come across cheats on a handful of occasions.

Now it's almost every day Yell

What about the whole Cheater1 affair?

Possibly it is just due to my long hiatus from chess activity that I do not hear of cheating so much, or maybe it's  happening right under my nose--who knows? I do feel it's probably not the best thing to focus on.

Fighting cheating is like fighting terrorism--any one, at any moment, can decide to 'become' a terrorist, and it's not like you 'know' who they are before they make that decision. In the same way, there is realistically no way to absolutely prevent individuals from cheating. Instead, care should be taken to develop an honourable society focussed on mutual respect for the game. If you associate with those sorts of individuals, you will find less cheating, and more chess, in my humble opinion.

The cheater1 affair escapes me, perhaps you could refresh my memory?

Are you suggesting i should avoid playing in tournaments? That's where the cheats usually ply their trade...

Sorry thegambitking, I can't claim to have had past accounts giving me membership since 2007 as you can.

However, being a member since "2012", I have seen many more "I'm leaving C.c" where the OP either has no intent of leaving and just posts to have people talk them out of it or they don't close their account and are back to posting/playing shortly thereafter. That's why I complimented this OP on actually doing what they said they were going to do.

And, what was your intent on posting the silman fan and fanatic comment? It came across as snarky, but I'll give you a chance to explain.

for me, 'real' chess is still face-to-face otb but even that has become a minefield and nothing is certain there anymore either

+1

At least OTB you have half a chance of spotting any cheating device...

Is it really that bad? I just signed up for a year yesterday....

I still can't wrap my head around why anyone would cheat in this environment. I can understand cheating when money is at stake. I don't condone it, but can understand the motivation. Avarice.

What possible gain can one achieve from cheating on a chess site? I signed up to use chess mentor and play to improve my game. I'm sure I'll lose plenty. But from loss comes experience and improvement. A cheater gains nothing from winning with a chess engine. He(or she) doesn't improve their game in any way. I just don't get it.... Weird.

Sorry to see this is causing some people to leave. Might have had fun playing you some day.... Wish you luck where ever you end up though.... Peace

Rumour has it two of these people were genuine recruits caught up in the thousands of daily returning/let-off cheaters and multiple a/c's.

It is a well-known fact that Silman's methods and books do not really produce strong players--the current lack of strong U. S. players (barring Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky) is evidence of this. Also, if you look at this video:

You will see an example of your typical American chess player from the 'Silman school'. I must say, it makes for good entertainment!

lol. offtopic lets go~

should you blame silman, or the general american culture? similarly, should you give too much credit to one or other specific russian trainer?

nah... chess in russia was greatly supported by the government.
you don't see that in the US (or in many other places), the fact that US got a player like Bobby Fischer was pretty much pure luck. even after Fischer you don't hear about anything like an "american chess school" or something :p

No, thegambitking ... Why did you read my post, go to my profile, look at the groups I'm in, see that I joined the Silman group and then use that as additional commentary on the validity of my post (along with the fact that I've been a member one less month than you, but not really because you've been here since 2007 under other accounts)? That's what Im interested in why you commented.

And, are you really judging the quality of Silman's work based on the backyard professor and his videos? The guy has his heart in the right place, and is excited about chess, but still very much an amateur (just like the rest of us).

Nice with the name calling there thegambitking. I now see the type of person you are....stalks profiles, desperately latches on to something frivolous, uses that as a point to prove authority on the subject and then name calls when questioned on 1-3 above.

As yoda would say, the douche is strong in you.

Also, you posted a pic of Ziryab when you talked about Silman having double chins. W ere you saying Ziryab also has double chins, or that he looks like Silman with double chins?

come on dude, there arent that many cheaters at chess.com especially at the level you are playing at. i honestly beleive that people who think there are lots of cheaters are seeing ghosts. why let 1/1000 ruin your online chess experience?

1/1000? you are delusional if you genuinely think that

Avatar of EliasAStern

:/ really dont think cheating occurs that often. what makes you think it happens so often (other than your crappy play)?

Cheats are banned at a rate of approx 1000 per month.

That figure doesn't include those who get away with it

Avatar of romanic666

personally i come across very few cheaters (almost zero) in online chess and im rated 1925,so i can only presume all the cheaters are in live chess(where i hardly play due to my bad internet) but to me cheaters hardly exist

If you think that either of those substandard sites are superior, then go. Stay there.
