Adult Chess Camps

Has anyone ever attended an adult chess camp?  Was it worthwhile, worth the time, and worth the money?

I was looking for one of these myself. Most of the camps seem to be geared toward children. Looks like my best bet (I'm 50) will be to head to Vegas in December and try to partake in all that is offered - GM simuls, lectures, etc. A "chess vacation" if you will.

Are you talking about the chess festival they have out there?

I'm thinking of doing Danny Kopec's camp, which I think is held in Vermont.  That's the only one I've really found.

Hi David,

I was thinking of the North American Open in December but you're right they also have one in June they call the National Open aka Las Vegas Chess Festival. It's too late for me to get out there for the June event but perhaps in December I can make it work. Seems like an ideal "destination" event. Right now I'm looking at Albany in September for my first ever OTB tournament! Read with interest your take on Seven Circles; at present I'm just doing standard tactics on Chess Tempo for 1-2 hours daily.

Yeah, I had to decide between the Chess Festival versus a combo of the World Open and the New York International, and so I chose the latter.

Best of luck in your journey in the world of competitive OTB chess.  If you have any questions on the OTB world, feel free to send me a message.

I need to blog about my findings with the 7 Circles.  I have alterred my training for a couple of reasons: 1) the 7 Circles is a bit harder on the player than it needs to be, and 2) some of the research (i.e., literature reviews of cognitive science & empirical psychology articles and experimentation on myself) I've done shows it to be less optimal than a slightly different training configuration.  I'll probably blog about that within the next month or two.

Will do, thanks. I wasn't familiar with the NY International; apparently there are chess tournaments outside of what is shown on chesstour.com! :)

I'm thinking of creating a 7 circles set by pruning the @1400 problems I've missed at Chess Tempo since 2011 down to @1000 if possible. I just became a gold member over there and am still figuring out how best to use the expanded features.
