What is the "division"? Is that a school tournament?
Is it your first tournament? Who is playing? What is the time control?

First, we have a tournament for the school along with other sports, called school intramural's,then next will be the district meet the best from every high school in the district, and after that the division meet, same with the district, the best from districts in our sector, next is the sector meet, after that the provincial meet, and then,The Palarong Pambansa (Filipino for "National Games". No,this is my second tournament I played at the district last year being board 2 and got first runner-up because I played more white than black, this year I won board 2 and will be advancing to the division meet.Last year the time control it was standard time control, this year the tournament for the district was active chess no recording of the game.I dont no if it will be changed again. Thanks for your reply
Tactics, tactics and tactics. After that tactics and tactics. Then tactics followed by a few breathes. Tactic, tactics and tactics. Then do ten more.
Who says they can't emphazise things further?
Yeah, I do tactics with my "The Giant Chess Puzzle Book" and I'm getting better with my visualization,I can see up to 5 moves ahead more clearer than before.Thank you for your advice Mr.ChessOfPlayer

Great. Just make sure you aren't rusty on the day.
Wait a minute! Why aren't you doing the perscribed tactics?
You mean prescribed, right? joke,I dont know what you mean by "Why aren't you doing the perscribed tactics?"

I meant to say prescribed. I was typing too fast or something else. Listen to what people say, not mean.
Anyway, why did you start the joke sentence without a capital letter? How about leaving a space between the comma and your continuation?
we can all be gramma nazi if we choice! xD
As in recording, do you mean notation of yours, and your opponents moves ? Also what is the date Evan, or when approximately is the tournament ?
Also good luck, and make sure to know the rules. Get plenty of rest, the night before, and if possible go over a few openings early, also some tactics. Even on the way to the tournament. It'll help get your mind ready. Its kind of like warming up, and stretching before you exercise. Best of luck, and let us know how you do.
Yup,that's right we can be anything if we chose it. The date for the division meet will be on sept. 22,23,and 24. I'll update you guys if anything happens. Thanks for the advice CrimsonKnight7.
I was going to suggest you to study openings but I guess it is too hard to correctly study them and I dont feel like debating on the forums.
Doing tactics is a good advice .
Studying openings is comical advice!
I do tactics for like 1 hour and 30 mins.I dont like studying openings I just think its very time consuming.
Well at least going over some of your opening moves based on the opening moves of the opponent. I mean if your black, and your opponent opens with c4. There is nothing wrong with going over a few lines. Also its good to have general ideas of your opening choices, based on what your opponent plays.
You don't have to make it an indepth study. You don't want to be at the board, and see something totally unexpected either, I remember how I felt, when it happened to me. I think I played too fast so my opponent wouldn't think I didn't know something they knew. However it can still happen, just take your time, and you should be fine.
I mainly agree tactics are vital to practice. You have high tactical ability, but you want to get more consistent with them. Good luck Evan.
I've never heard of something like that Rob3rtJamesFischer,I'll try what you're doing it seems very interesting to me.I Agree with you CrimsonKnight7 that I have to study openings or atleast know the ideas in it,I just feel like I should study more on strategy.I'm studying with Elements of chess strategy and its pretty hard to do what the book says like finding the chief strategic element others in real games,So thats why I don't study openings right now.Anyways thanks for the advice, Both of you
Also Rob that is good, I have heard many masters do similar. Some even find improvements. Irina Crush was talking about it, and I also know the Polgar sisters have done it as well.
Also many others. Good luck
I think by knowing an opening's ideas, will also help you strategically. Thats not to say you can neglect pawn structures, nor common positions. Isolated pawns aren't always a weakness. They definitely can turn into one however.
Trying to remember every single mating pattern you run across is also good. Especially what the position looked like, and variants of similar positions. When will it work, and won't work.
Often times, just getting a board out, and setting up the pieces, and changing it till you know them inside, and out. I know younger people use their computer more today.
Also studying end games is important, I absolutely hated rook, pawn endings. Yuck, but they are common, you will run into them, probably more than any other.
Anyway, you have to keep your practice, and study interesting to you, so you don't get burned out, and take things in the order you think is most appropiate to you. Remember its a game, and play it the way that pleases you, and enjoy it. Best wishes, and good luck.
I forgot you said it's double edged, sorry,I agree with you Rob3rtJamesFischer that I should do more tactics and study games that have my opening.I also agree with you CrimsonKnight7 your post, but I'm actually studying middlegame strategy and I also study endgames. I can't thank both of you enough (crimsonknight7) and Rob3rtJamesFischer for your help.
The tournament will for the division meet here in my province,Any Advice for the tournament? Much Appreciated
