I don't think it's necessarily the same if a guy does it because it won't gain them attention (certainly not as much), but even if it is to be considered the same, most guys don't do it. Most women/girls do.
You're attractive and I'm sure you do get a lot of this, but I think you underestimate the amount of attention the less attrative girls also get here on chess.com. The amount of unattractive (or just older) women on here who post albums of themselves and get countless comments about their beauty is astounding.
I just went through all the players in this tournament I'm in and at least a quarter of them are men with their own face as their avatar. You also have no idea how many girls do it because if a girl doesn't do it, you assume she's a man.
And just because attention from desperate men is a possible consequence of a female using a photo of herself doesn't mean she wants the attention. I don't really want to bring up victim blaming, but that's pretty much what this is. You're suggesting the consequences are the fault of the victim (for lack of a better word, getting attention doesn't really make you a victim) just because they should know it might happen. That's like arguing everyone who gets into a car wants to die just because it's a possible outcome.
I use my face as my avatar for the following reasons:
- It's what I do for pretty much every internet account. Not much thought goes into it.
- Your avatar is supposed to represent you. That's me.
- The female presence on this site should be very vocal. I think every girl should make it known and obvious that she is a girl so this site looks less overwhelmingly male. And maybe then desperate little boys will stop getting sweaty every time they encounter a female on here.
Anyone who really knows me is aware I'm too lazy to grew beers, I even prefer to pay for them.
