Hey i was wondering that can just playing a ton of chess get u to your grandmaster level or studying books is compulsory.. Is there any player who became a grandmaster just by practising all by himself?

Teichmann70 says 90% book are useless. The only way you could progress is by getting coach by Teichmann70.

Crazychessplaya

Teichmann70 is 90% useless.

I am not really qualified to be authoritative on this, but I suspect that most books are not intended to bring the reader up to grandmaster level. After all, only a very small fraction of players is anywhere near that goal. Also, even if lower-level goals have been achieved by some without books, that would not contradict the possibility that books could be helpful to many.

A knowledge of classic games and players is very useful. Combine this with tactic training, endgame practise and a bit of opening preparation and any player will get stronger. How strong, will depend on age, talent and work ethic. Also there are tons of great videos on YouTube. Watching videos & chess tutorials is equally instructive. But yes, most GMs will have either had coaching or at least devoted themselves to intense study of the game.

The other 10% might make workable dog food.
