Do you know of one?
Xie Jun was one of the china's first grandmasters. In her footsteps; several strong female chess players have emerged.
and would you consider Polgar rather than pillsbury? I think being one of the only women grandmasters to defeat a sitting world champion is a historic accomplishment and places her impact on a chess above that of the old master.
Great! X marks the spot.
I know you'd like that choice. :D
thankx for some fun creativity... and I thought I knew alot of the old names-but wow.
Perelshyten? Dadian? Showalter?
even Queen Victoria; I know of her general place in history- but what is here connection to chess?
Queen Vickie was a chess player, some say a good one, some say a not-so-good one. Morphy had a private audience with her and they supposedly played chess, although that's never been proven.
The American Ches Bulletin, 1916 had this to say:
A Morphy Relic.
Eugene Morphy, a first cousin of the immortal Paul Morphy, who greatly resembles the portrait of his illustrious relative, had many interesting anecdotes to tell of the incomparable master.
Among the numerous and splendid trophies left by the master was a simple sheepskin, upon which was drawn a chessboard;' no gold lettering, no scroll work, no ornamentation of any kind, but in the lower right-hand corner the signature of Queen Victoria. It is Mr. Morphy's intention to present this relic to the British Museum.—"Globe-Democrat."
Jackson Showalter was a US Champion. His wife Nellie was considered the US Ladies' Champion due to an aborted match around the turn of the century... see Nellie.
Prince Dadian was a character of a singular sort.
