Von Henig is fun. FM William Graif has some excellent content on youtube for it.

yeah, I like his channel a lot!

Von Henig, Von Popiel. He even has a gambit against the English and ir works well... at least at my level

If anyone is interested in this Von Henig gambit, have a look at this. I beat a 2100 player (by my standards that is a STRONG player). https://www.chess.com/game/live/104118009729

That was tactical! He had to take the knight with his Q and then he was probably winning, but he didn't dare!

Correct! You know your stuff. Black has to give up their queen, with the king in the middle of the board, to get an advantage. In a slow time control game, Black will probably win from there

If anyone is annoyed at you, understand that you have successfully entered into his mind. Now if you want you can trashtalk to destroy his confidence, or just block chat. Caro kann players like solid lines, so anything tactical they shit their pants if not experienced.

I just got a lot of abuse from a very angry player because I played a gambit against the Caro Kann. He said I was destroying other peoples experiences by playing trap openings, and that he hoped I had the worst day of my life.

Feel conflicted here. On one hand I also love paying gambits (Evan's gambit is my favorite), on the other hand I am also Caro player and feel called out. I am sorry you had to deal with that whiny crybaby, you are allowed to play however you feel like. Now because of this guy all Caro players are catching strays in this forum, I promise we are not all completely insufferable.

No, of course not. Millions of people play the Caro Kann and its close relative, the French. Most people on here are fine.

In fact, even the guy who abused me felt guilty and sent me an apology

you werent abused. You were just insulted. getting ¨abused¨ is very different from getting insulted on the internet. Why use the word ¨abused¨?

Well, the chess.com report function literally has the option to select "verbal abuse". And that is what I selected

But in what way is "verbal abuse" different from "verbal insult"?

verbal abuse is typically when somebody is yelling at you in your face and screaming at you and making you feel scared. (they do this in the army alot) while a verbal online insult is just some dude calling you names in a chat box

That's too subjective. i.e. it's your opinion.

maybe, but the point is that one is much worse than the other. Somebody who gets offended and upset about what people online are calling them in a chat box need to grow up

UPDATE: the person in question actually sent me a message to apologize. Maybe the world isn't such a bad place after all!

Well done them - we all make mistakes and we should all learn to say sorry.

Yes, I agree. Or get past it. However, it can take people unawares and give them a bad feeling. Maybe you have to be willing to either interpret it as just "some people are slightly mentally ill" or maybe simply write them of as "scum" to be impervious, although I think my approach is milder. I do find it vaguely irritating but it's the result of immaturity. I report bad cases of it but they're very rare.

I think the internet is where people get to be who they really are, so you should expect alot of people to be mean. Because of that you should either grow tougher skin or keep off social platforms online.

Just tell him that the Caro-Kann is diabolical and move on.
