Am I cheating?

It is important I do what is right according to the rules but now I wonder - I play Chess Bots and as I consider how I would move, I then ask Stockfish what it would play and use that to analyze why it made that suggestion.

Sometimes I end up winning a game because of it.  I notice my 'rating' never changes from 800 so I figure Chess.com understands it is for training/evaluation purposes.  But I need to be sure I'm not cheating in doing that as I play the bots.  I've only been using Chess.com for a month or so and it is important I do what is right!  I NEVER use it when playing real people!

You can use assistance against the bots in Play Bots . There are even options under Custom with built-in assistance.

Oh thank you so much, Martin! WHEW! I saw on Epic Chess today that someone had cheated and I didn't want to do anything since I love chess.com so much! I never saw the Custom part - I'll check that out too! Yep, Play Bots is very helpful and I LOVE the puzzles and Learning portions as well! Again, I appreciate your input!

How is this fair for someone to consult Stockfish while playing a match? That would be an unfair advantage in my opinion and crosses the boundaries. If you can’t think for yourself while playing a match, do everyone a favor and don’t play. I am sure it also takes time to do this, so why waste the other players time by stalling. You shouldn’t need assistance. Train your brain by playing. It’s the only fair way, period. Or wait until you understand the game better to play “live”games.

He said he uses Stockfish while playing against bots. Not in actual matches.

I see Martin already showed you the custom settings, but yes, you are allowed to cheat as much as you want against chess bots.
Even if you don’t cheat, chess bots don’t change your rating

My apologies, I missed the bot part from David, but I did notice Martin point to that. So my bad. Thanks.

@RubberSoul54, no worries - just saw these responses. I'm new here still. And I agree that during match would be WRONG. I saw where someone cheated during tournament IIRC and I was worried. When playing bot, I consider what I would move and only THEN ask the bot what it would suggest. I try mine then go back and tries stockfish. Stocky is ALWAYS right and I learn a great deal. But I'm only rated at like 540 so what do I know? All my best to you! thumbup
