Am I destined to be a terrible chess player for life? Should I give up and find another hobby?

I have literally spent the past few days watching YouTube videos on chess, reading about chess openings, strategies and tactics, a little about endgame, analyzed lots of games, I even changed the max rating of players i can match up with from 200+ to 50+, researched how to defend pieces and prevent hanging pieces and blundering, i have even watched chess games of other players and studied all the classics.

All this effort, and I am still at 260 for rapid. I have read that those in the 200s rating are amongst the worst of the worst, and I am still losing to them, sometimes even badly.

Am i destined to be a terrible chess player no matter how hard i try? Maybe there is something wrong with my brain and i just can't learn anything chess related?

Should I just give up on chess? Am I just wasting my time?

I am losing motivation to play.

How long have you actually been playing? also at this level I  truely just reccomend watching videos and perfecting how the pieces move and what all of them are able to do

So you havent really given it any time to grow, and at sub 400 manily focus on the pieces and what each one is able to do, use lichess's movement practice and watch youtube videos for beginners. You are not "destined" to be a bad chess player your just incredibly new, personally i think adding more chess content helps your brain get familar with the game even if your not actively playing so that could help

Yeah I guess its still a bit early. But it is demotivating, reading stories where people get to over 500 in a day or two.

you are starting from scratch yes?

when i first started playing online i was 800 but i was not new to chess i had played the game multiple times and had maybe 300/400 games played in real life, if you are starting actually new you would start at 100 meaning you have shown growth, people getting to 500/600/700/800 in a week had prior experience wether they say they do or not

Just saying, you dont need to be good at a hobby to do it...

A hobby is something you do that you enjoy.

You don't have to be good at football to play in a team and enjoy it. There's levels for everyone to play in and have fun. Same with chess, or any other activity that can be a hobby.

If you dont enjoy it, stop playing it.

Thanks for the advice. I have watched plenty of YouTube videos, as well as read articles for beginners. I have read lots of articles and videos on chess opening principles, such as controlling the center, opening up with bishops/knights (minors) before queen/rook (major)

I also understand each piece and how they move, as well as their value in points

I read about sacrificing or trading pieces of equal value, e.g. don't trade knight for a castle

I would say its pretty much from scratch. I maybe have played 4 or 5 games back in highschool which is over 10 years ago

Then you need to play longer time control possibly even 30+0 and foucs entirely on not blundering doing a triple check for each move, looking for checks captures and attacks and really focusing on looking at each move you and your opponent is playing

Yes but anyone can get better at chess and he started 2 weeks ago so he is nowhere near his limit

I do enjoy playing chess, and reading about it and learning about it etc. But i do admit losing game after game and not making any progress does make it less enjoyable

In your most recent game you lost before even hitting 8 minutes on the clock clearly you arent taking your time and while you opened with the center you played h and a pawn moves and brought your rook up randomly and randomly traded a bishop away for no reason, all of this is irrational and was played very fast, you should actually be using your time

Jeffrey-SB

If you would like we can hop on discord and just play some unrated games and look to see how you can improve

Oh yeah that one. It was like 3am. I accidentally threw away my castle, I was frustrated and tired. i gave up. Normally i would have put up a fight but i am just too done at the moment. Hopefully after some rest i will do better
