chess isn't like what you see in movies. nobody is naturally good at it.

you have to spend at least a decade playing to become a pro.

Not rly some people can get to at least 2000 in a couple years but it depends on the person but it does take a long time to get good at it

So at least 10 years or nearly 10 years? And a 10 year old IM must have been playing 2 years before they were born?

Well some people argue that only 2700 rated people and over are professional players, as below that, they usually need to do other things to sustain themselves. IMs can't live of tournament winnings.

In any case, in order not to get stuck in this debate, even if her view is slightly off for some prodigies, it is pretty close to the truth generally speaking.

In my opinion professional is when you can start to compete effectively (usually around lets say 1600-2000 fida ) or around 1800+ blitz on chess.com (prob closer to 1900-2000)

Playing your friends and losing on purpose counts as cheating.

For this type of topic, anything works, because one can say professional and be thinking about something else, like being relatively higher rated, whatever that means (for someone 1200 is relatively higher rated, for someone 2 000, etc.).

But in a literal sense, as with any other profession, professional chess player is someone who makes his main income through playing in tournaments, so only a handful of players are in this category.

For instance, IM Eric Rosen was doing some graphic design and photography if I am not mistaken, in order to support himself, before his chess streaming took off. I've seen chess.com profile a few years ago, from a person who was at that time in the top 100 or thereabouts, stating that he is taking students. Hou Yifan herself is working at the university for instance.

Basically only a small amount of people are really professional chess players. Others have to either do something else connected to chess, or to have a separate profession. Sadly, chess is not football (which you call soccer) where there could be 1 000 better players in the world than yourself, and you can still earn several millions throughout your career.

You just opened the Door to the chess world a little bit. If you enjoy the game, learn and stay curious you will find wisdom.

So i would suggest to call yourself a noob, a little understatement does not harm wink.png

46 Magnus started playing chess in 1995. He reached 2000 FIDE by 2001.

Unless you know someone better than Magnus I don't think it's possible to reach 2000 so fast.

Online ratings don't matter much for being considered pro.

What is the point of writing such utter nonsense?

15001-1799 Advanced Intermediate
