Obviously a great player, but I think the perception is that he's not as strong as he was and there are others (Carlsen in particular) who are stronger players at this point in time. Anand hasn't really been performing well in tournaments recently.
Anand
Nearly six years as world champion and he still doesn't get enough respect. I don't know why either.
Well I remember that I posted some ideas for Anand in another thread here. First of all he needs to grow a beard to look more imposing. Also he is a very nice guy but he has to STOP with all of the smiling. He needs to practice his " Death " stare to look more fearsome to his fans and opponents ( & attack more in his Games, " no more Mister Nice Guy ! " ).

I am quite agree with you. The reason might be the jealousy some people have for him cause he has already written history in the terms of match play. & not the ordinary matches!!!! WC matches for God Sake! He is the only undisputed champion in allthe formats exist in chess history.
If we talk about the top level tournament wins, then he stands on number 3, just behind of two legends, Kasparov & Kramnik. He has total of 17 tournaments in his account. He has won the Rapid WC as well. He has been one of the strongest rapid players for years. 2800 mark is something still a mystery for so many great players. 6 chess oscars are enough to tell his popularity among chess fans around the world.
And now the strongest point in his favor!! Just one player in the history has better record over Kasparov (The best player assumed by chess world), Kramnik with +5 -4 =40 . And Anand is the only player to beat Kramnik with +10 - 8 =67.
On its contrary, what has been achieved by Carlsen so far?? Just the rating?? Only one thing is not enough to prove anything in life. One has to perform equally better in almost all the fields.
And the funniest part is the record of Anand & Carlsen, where Anand beats him by +6 -3 =20!!! Where Kramnik is just able to draw with Carlsen with +4 -4 =12.
All these statastical records are enough to prove Anand's greatness & make anyone jealous. Specially if this great player comes from a developing Asian country.
That's the only reason for him not getting respect. If he would be from some Europian or American country then the people would have different views. The people who talks against Anand, don't even deserve to talk about chess, if they can not respect the facts & someone's achievements.
+1, anyone who talks about Anand being a "bad champion" or "not worthy of the title" needs to take a good look at what the guy has achieved in his career. Far more than Carlsen to date (yes, maybe partly because of age). Need to show some respect and stop being so fickle.
nO ONE can underestimate AnanD EVen CarLSEN....dont know what the result is....But the matches definatelly going to be interesting....I like to support Anand...But we all kNOW wHo is better this TiMe....i hOpe AnanD....will SaFe his TitLle Of ''wOrld ChaMpioN''....

Well, Carlsen is 22 years old, and saying that his only achievement is his rating is hardly to do him justice. He has won lots ot top tournaments and has excellent results against almost all top players. OK, his 3-6 against Anand is often referred to, but they played many games when Carlsen was very young, and the last years Carlsen has 2-0. As for Carlsen having to perform better in all fields, I don't think there is much wrong with his performances the last years. There's a reason he has chances to be given the best player of the year award for the fifth year in a row.
