anger when losing

Why do people get so angry when they are losing?  I've played a handful of games here and in almost half people disconnect, repeatedly offer draws, or say rude things to me in chat. Why do people get so upset, when chess is only a game?  Missing tactics happens to everyone, even the best players!

Probably because they have no real interaction with you therefore no real comeback to the insults and poor behaviour. I would say don't take it personally although I'm sure it's hard not to depending on what's being said. Enjoy the site, enjoy the games you play and enjoy meeting new people, not everyone is like that. Smile

No face to face contact.  The annonymity of the internet allows everyone to be an internet tough guy.

I get angry when I lose and not just at chess. I have always been this way. I know it's only a game, but this doesn't help. At least I don't behave badly to my opponents when I lose, but I find it sickening. Being online or face to face, it's just the same for me.

But how is being rude "tough"?

It isnt being tough, but for some hiding behind anger gives the illusion of toughness. This is the internet.  Sitting safely in front of a monitor allows us to treat people as badly, and as rudely as we want, with no fear of actually having to be around anyone.

I get angry, especially when I just do something stupid to lose, but I never vent it on the internet. I just give my cat a good swat and be done with it.

lol...yea that too

I just pulled up your opponents and sampled them at random. Very few Americans. My observation is that eastern Europeans and folks from southeast Asia are most likely to disconnect if they are losing. I think your experience has as much to do with the nationality of your opponents as anything. The fact that you're a pretty young American probably just fuels the fire...

Well, if you're self-aware enough to realize that perhaps you could work on changing that behavior?

Just ignore the behavior of your opponents. Focus on the game and have fun.

it has something to do with the movies of the 80's.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and other stars said some probably uncensored words on US television however on european television it was uncensored and he was pretty cool.

So many in europe actually think that it is normal to say f words and so on all the time.

I just ignore those who writes something after a game I don't know them.

Well, I'm even more sensitive, lately...

This weekend, I witnessed a man completely lose it and cruelly and relentlessly berate his young child for performing poorly in a chess tournament. It brought me to tears.

It was in a language I don't speak or understand but it was clear what was happening by how he made him sit and go over his moves on a tablet, yelling derisively after everything the child showed him. He even lifted his hand as if to hit him a few times and got right in his face. Then he walked down the street to his car way ahead of the boy just turning around to yell some more. The child never uttered a word, just bowed his head and looked so cowed.

I felt so helpless. I was worried if I interceded he would just take it out on the child once they got home. :(

good thing we do not have a skype connection to those we play against. I can only imagine what would come out of the speakers if a player gets mad.
