Animated chess video Ranking Top 5 players of all time
By your standards it is hard to argue with your conclusion. If you looked at the best players in their prime compared to their contemporaries, I would put
Bobby Fischer
Magnus Carslen
Garry Kasparov
Paul Morphy
For staying power you can't beat Lasker and Kasparov. Paul Morphy had a short career in chess but he was unparalleled in his time. Fischer had incredible dominance in some tournaments against his peers. Kasparov showed great strength and staying power both in match play and in tournament play as you pointed out.
If you ask who was the greatest chess player in his peak. I think Magnus in his peak could beat Fischer but it would be close. If you ask who was the greatest chess player in his peak without the aid of computers, I would argue that it was Fischer.
However, I haven't kept a close watch on the world champions after Fischer until the last couple of years when I reentered the chess world. I have seen Magnus do very well at his best. However his many draws in championship matches and super-tournaments show that he is not always dominant and has had to rely on the faster time limits to win matches and tournaments - not a good thing in my book. But Magnus has won in all three time controls and has remained on top for awhile. That is quite an accomplishment.
Thanks for video and your results which were clearly justified by your analysis using your priorities to determine your rankings.
cool thanks I will return with my top 5 after reviewing, through the years of chess. Before the aid of computers and with the aid of computers. Chess has come a long way since Paul Morphy. I also have to do some research into the Karpov vs Fischer. Why? Because I feel the cold war of the 70's played a part of why he didn't want to play. I mean The US kicked him out of the USA and took his citizenship for wanting to play Spassky in Yugoslavia or around. The US Gov said it was aiding the enemy. I know a touchy subject. Peace and freedom is good.

There is a very good and obvious reason why Magnus draws a lot. He is the greatest and strongest player of all time.
U have Naka on there and not Magnus??
Magnus is about 150 rating points stronger and scores around 70% against Naka.
This. Magnus is better than Hikaru, at everything.

Hmm, maybe, but I think Fischer is bit ahead of Tal. Every world champion had chess as part of their life, important, but just a part. These 5 had chess as their life ( main objective in life ),Kasparov who left chess for politics, returned for chess!
Bobby Fischer definitely it's number one and I had the chance to find out more about his play from his best friend. If you want to know more google this: " Learn how to become expert in a day tickets".
Tal was only champ for 1 year and Fischer never defended his title. Compared to the years of dominance by Kasparov, Karpov, or Carlsen; shouldn't that be considered?

lol, that's what i'm saying.. Mikhail Tal has beaten Bobby Fischer many MANY times. and even in their friendly matches, Fischer was only able to beat Tal once and stalemate him twice.

At his 1971-72 peak, Fischer was the greatest of all-time. Nobody else has shutout the top players in the world, in match play, like he did. Tal was a bad match up for Fischer, but Fischer probably had a much better record vs the other top GM's than Tal did.
I made this animated chess video to share my personal opinion on top 5 greatest chess players of all time. I wanna hear about your opinion, who are your top 5 players?
