I'm curious since it's been many, many years since I played OTB: is it customary for club level players to announce "Check" or "Mate" when playing OTB ?
Would it be considered as trying to distract the opponent, and so should you just wait for them to make an illegal move and then call them on it ?
I take it for granted that at any titled level or serious competition it's not necessary as both players would most lekely be well aware of a "Check" for example, even if it was a discovered "Check".
If you're playing a beginner, you might consider announcing check or mate (it might be helpful to a beginner). But for anyone else, I wouldn't do it. Your opponent would probably be irritated at you.
