anti anxiety meds and chess

This is kind of a touchy subject but there might be a player who's in the same boat. About 8 months a go I was going through a hard time in my life so I got put on meds. While it helped some, I lost more than I thought. I used to be rated in the high 1700s  but after I got put on the medication I dropped to around 1200. My brain was so cloudy that I had lost my love for chess. I've finally been able to wing myself off and I've gotten my love for the game back. I learned a very good lesson I guess, the easy way of fixing things actually ends up way harder in the long run. Love you all and just thought I would share happy.png <3

Ref OP - Meds where not the cure for my anxiety a few years back. My thoughts were running all over the place pertaining to a certain situation at the time. if some one has similar, then playing chess might be a way to slow them way down, or even divert all that mental attention in another direction, i.e, to the game in hand. Obviously I would urge that advice from your medical care provider be sought first and adhered to - with possible chess as a little aid to your treatment. Seek proper medical advice first.

Seems to be correct. Not very religious but the whole an idle mind is devil's workshop thing seems pretty on par. Staying busy seems to work. And reading ghost_of_pushwoods intelligent comments of course happy.png

We don't know the details regarding the OP, but it sounds to me like he's saying that his doctor just gave him pills, when some other treatment was required. Sadly, too many doctors these days are just pill pushers. Don't get me wrong - Sometimes pills are the right solution, but many times they aren't. A good doctor will know the difference.

I've been using chess instead of meds I guess.  I don't think there is an easy way to fix some things.  We all just do the best we can with what we've got.  Meds certainly work for lots of people and their side effects are pretty well documented and so to be expected really.  I'm glad to hear you seem to be in a better place.  Your chess rating is far less important than your mental health.  happy.png

This is the real cure for depression. No side effects, except maybe a lifelong love for 70s music.

Agree heavily. My mom has tried them when her dad died and they caused a lot of problems, at least to what I heard.

Anti anxiety meds make you groggy, harder to concentrate, bad for chess, good for your health.

Only tom understood unconditional yet wishy-washy love.  *sniff* alas poor tom, the bunny knew him over multiple lives but still knew him so little.   This thread was dedicated as a safe space for him.
