I found this chess set. All the pieces are hand-carved looks like out of ivory/bone. I know it is Chinese. It is hand made, the case have mother of pearl, all pieces are included. The inside has hand made sections for each piece to fit in. I dont know anything else about it or the value? Any help would be great!!

No offense but that looks like a 'tourist' set.  A set that local craftspeople make to sell to tourists.  Not worth that much and you could probably find many versions of this on ebay.

Guess I'm "tourist" in my tastes, because I like it.

Embarassed I didn't mean 'tourist' in a bad way.  Just that it looks like it's worth more than it is.  Not my taste particularly though.

I'm not sure what 'tourist' means either? What 'local people' do you mean?

When Americans go travelling they often buy 'tourist' items made by people at the locality they are visiting -- 'local people'.  These items are made specifically for export and often look more expensive and rare than they actually are.  As I said, have a look on ebay to find many similar chess sets to the one you are showing us.

Chinese chess have “Cannons” and actually the "international" chess in China starts in near history with few local styles of china. I am guessing that the sets come from India?

Hello,

My name is Scottie. I too have a chess set like yours. The pieces are the same, but the board is different design. My girl friend bought it for me from a old lady who said that her husband bought it while he was in the korean war and brought it home with him. My girl friend paid $280.00 dollars for the set. I honestly can not find no imformation on it at all. For there are no markings any where on it. I do collect unique things, that is why she bought it for me. Can anyone tell me anything about it other what is wrote here.

Thanks,

Scottie Russell

Take a good look at the close up view of the Knight. Notice how many details it has in it. . . If all the pieces are really "hand carved" there should appear some little (as small as you want) differences. So I think the pieces might be pre-machine carved or moulded depending on the material.

The box is another thing. That is easier to do. . . have you ever seen the hand inlaid boxes made by the Moors? (Spain)? They are much more detalied.

And, of course, the set was intended to be sold as "souvenier", since the size of the base of the pieces and the squares of the board do not fit each other. . . you could not play chess with such cramped pieces

So basically it is not worth what my girlfriend paid for it. Maybe this can be a learning experience for her. thanks for your information on the chess set. it was very helpful.
