Hello,

Tactics on chess.com are useful, but I dont have the skills to implement them in my game. Is there any effective way to learn tactics?

The puzzles section here is very useful for learning tactical patterns. But if you're an absolute beginner check out YouTube for learning basic chess tactics.

If you're not able to use the tactics in your games now, it means that you need to work more on other areas of the game: for example strategy/positional play. As Bobby Fischer said: Tactics flow from a superior position. Tactics and strategy go hand in hand. If you get better at strategy, you'll be able to use the tactics from the puzzles in your games.

Buy "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" by Fischer

Yes. Tactical patterns are closely related to pawn structures- so learning the basic positional and tactical motifs of the related pawn structures will make it easier for you to spot the tactical shots.

"Chess Tactics for Students" by John Bain is a great place to start. It's available on Amazon. A book, that gives you explanations and teaches in a structured way is the best way to acquire some tactical knowledge.

I like to think of a chess game like this... from a bird's eye view and considering the non-pawns it's something like:

general mobility -> committing to an area -> coming into contact with weak pawns or squares around the king -> tactics

Tactics is last!

This is a useful video on tactic- improving strategy. Watch it.

I use Lucas Chess to drill ‘tactics by repetition’ and it’s really helpful.
If you invest urself in it u get good results

I like doing like 3-4 puzzle rush then select the ones I failed in separate tabs and do them over and over about 5 times in a cycle. Manual repitition, if u will.

There’s definitely more to puzzles than just solving them. For example the repetition (woodpecker) approach argues that just seeing a pattern again and again is just as efficient as solving more and more new ones.

Also when solving easy ones try to see all moves and all possible replies , not just play the obvious move. If it’s a mate in 2-4 and u go for it- not good. Know exactly mate in how much and all possible engine defenses.

In harder puzzles remember succeeding is not as important as calculating deep in to positions. Just seeing deep and looking at possible variations is the essence of the puzzle that way you won’t tilt if you fail.

(I only started studying semi-serious recently, about 3 months
but my improvement has been satisfying)
