Critter 1.6a is getting very close, and it might even be a bit stronger at fast time controls on a single core.
Any free engine stronger than Houdini 1.5?

Noh ya..critter 1.6 cant beat even stockfish..i tried.. I made them lay in 5 min tournament with fastr time control

How many games of Critter vs. Stockfish, and what were the results?

No, I highly doubt there is any free engine stronger than houdini 1.5.
I'm wondering, is there any engine at all stronger than houdini 1.5 other than houdini 2 or 3?

I dont knw if the latest critter is around the strength of houdini1.5a but it cant beat it.. I tried.

Critter and Stockfish are probably the only open source engines which come close to Houdini (ex 1.5)

Try Gull II (http://gullchess.sourceforge.net/), it does perform well against Houdini 1.5. Critter 1.6a does seem to be at least equal to Houdini, while Stockfish 2.3.1 was disappointing (based on tournament on 10mn time control, 8 matches, round-robin, 64 bit versions)

i tried on 32 bit, critter is no match for stockfish in 5 min match

OK, I just assumed you were using 64-bit engines. 32-bit engines might be a different kettle of fish, as I haven't seen any test results between the two for 32-bit. I'm assuming you're using the same hash table size, same opening book, same number of threads, ponder turned off for all engines, etc.? And at these small rating differences, you need to run at least hundreds of games between any two engines (one or two thousand would be better).
I'd also suggest that you test at 40 moves in 4 minutes (repeating), as using a flat 5-minute time control with no increment might produce some forfeits on time, which would skew the results.
