Any tests (outside of playing) for chess ability?

Are there any tests which can predict some ability to do well as a chess player?  A US school psychologist who plays chess might be likely to know of tests which predict at least part of chess ability.  Interested in tests that apply to correspondence or slow chess (not blitz or bullet).

There are a number of books (and a Chess Life magazine column) that present a number of positions and have you pick the best move out of several choices. They then attempt to give you an estimated rating based on how many positions you solve correctly. Probably not super accurate, but a good ballpark estimate.

In general, the variance in any such test is so wide as to be practically worthless instead of the much more straightforward approach of actually playing.

Just based on experience, I believe you can find a string correlation between solving tactics and playing ability.  Somebody should do a scientific study on it.  Maybe at the end of some OTB tournament, have the players complete a "fun" tactics quiz (with appropriate prize for motivation... probably you don't even need too much of a prize, ches splayers seem to play for free anyway : )
