Hi I'm Alex and just begun learning this game when I was in Spain last week (hence the profile photo ha) and now back to the UK weather I want to carry on learning.

Is there any tips you can give me please to help me start. I am not rated yet I need to play a few more games but I am sure my rating will be bad! Thanks.

If you don't like books like tygxc suggested, then there's loads of good YouTube channels to help you. Daniel naroditsky being the most educational one, but John Bartholomew and st Louis chess channel do some good videos for beginners.

But just play loads of long games and analyse them after. Post your games here and I can take a look at them if you want

There are tutorials there's also a learn feature on chess.com I think but I think it is reserved for gold, platinum or diamond (not sure which one ) which could be increadably helpful just focus on not

Thank you for this and taking me for a normal person here unlike some here above lol!

Learn basic endgames

Learn a couple openings

Blunder check (you will almost always blunder though )

Learn how to play positional chess/ and attacking chess

Learn how to attack /play positional chess in mid games

Learn how pawn structures work

Learn how to deal with tilt you need to learn either how to rage corre tlt or how to stay calm

There's more but it is difficult to explain

You should check out my Beginner Opening named the Crab Opening.

It can be fun line to play as beginner.

Another UK-based lady here. I’m also learning and I find very useful watching the lessons here in the premium version and lots of Youtube videos. Puzzles are good fun too.

I think those resources are good for people who are wanting to get good really fast, but if you're just getting into the game and trying to figure out if it's for you, then I think that playing against the Computer in Friendly mode and then using the Game Review to get an understanding of what happened is probably an easier introduction.

I'm not sure how many Game Reviews per day a basic member gets, but you can see whether it's helping you learn and then maybe trial a premium membership for a month to help you decide if it's worth it (it's free, but remember to cancel before it renews)

In terms of some of the other comments, it's like when anyone who seems to be an attractive young woman posts online - they can attract lots of trolls and stalkers and simps and outright abusers, and unfortunately the Chess.com forums are no exception. You can report the more egregious examples and the site will deal with them, but for the low level stuff, you're just going to need to learn how to block people and disable chat.

Just ignore the confusing/unhelpful comments.

If you really want to improve at chess, there are many good things you can do to improve if you are willing to invest the time and effort into learning and getting better. I recently answered basically this same question in another thread, so I'll just link that here: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/advanced-players-any-tips-for-beginners-to-help-them-get-better

It just depends what ou want iv been saying the fast way to improve but the slow way is to play long rapid games and analyze very carefully like most people recommend

Ps: not everyone does well in blitz so it isn't the best if your a beginner usually rapid is better

But some people do well in it

tip. don't play against people from India💀 ITS A JOKE

Tip: Don't listen to racist comments. The worst ones will get deleted by the mods, whereas the milder ones may attract a warning.

1 Do not forget that your opponent is also trying to win. As beginners we have/had a tendency to focus way to much on our plans, and not enough on the other player.

2 try to castle, in the first 10 moves, until you are above 1200 at the least.

3 try not to move the same piece twice, for at least the first 10 moves.-there is no point in using your bishop to throw a check at the opposite king, if all they have to do is move a pawn to block the check, and force your bishop to move or get taken.-- this means you moved the same piece twice, and your opponent only used 1 move to thwart you. you lose a 'tempo' in that you are now having to react to them.

4- do not be too hard on yourself- remember how long it took you to learn how to tie your shoes. Weeks and weeks -chess will take longer.
