+1?,now am the one nt so sure wat u sayin.all am sayin is if n1 thinks they cant make to super gm given all the time resources coaching experience, everything.let them declare themselves now and cum out in the open,or 4eva hide in your shells of unbelief and doubt.if botvinnik was alive gosh..actualy he turns in his grave.let your soul in peace, gud sir.

No. Because knowledge doesn't = ability. It's a bit like saying that if I got the best boxing coaches in the world and learnt perfect boxing technique, that I could be a professional boxing titleholder. It would still be unlikely because ability would come into it - tactical thinking in creative ways, natural atheletic genes etc.

I.

I'll quite happily admit I've studied and played chess for long enough to know that I don't have a natural aptitude and flair for it in the way that, say, a Magnus Carlsen does, so I'm quite confident I'd never catch up with guys like that however much effort I put in. Fortunately, since the enjoyment I get from studying and playing chess isn't contingent on holding out the hope of being a super GM some day, I don't particularly care.

I have no idea why you think having all the supercomputers in the world would help with anything.

I've seen enough wrong computer analysis to know that a reliance on chess computers would work against becoming a super GM!! A 2700+ player will often beat another 2700 player by doing something that a computer will never understand: giving the opponent a position that is objectively equal in computer assessment but one that for a human is harder to play.

If Botvinnik was alive, he'd probably be the 1st to tell you that the top level of chess is a very exclusive club. I can't imagine him (or Petrosian, or Karpov/Kasparov/Fischer etc) telling you "If I can do it, anybody can.

I am reminded of the book "chess master versus grandmaster" by Max Euwe and Walter Meiden in which Euwe says in the introduction: the absense of a player from this game collection does not preclude the possibility that they are strong or even outstanding.

Ignorance is the great equalizer.

No, very few can become a super GM. Think of all the accomplished players who can't manage it--so some nobody can?

Avatar of TheGrobe

Not just some nobody, any nobody.

No they can't.  People who make these kinds of statements have no concept at all of how a super GM thinkd or plays. Do you think the reason someone like Nakamura could score score 100% in a simul against a roomful of 1600 players is because he has spent more time in front of a computer?

No need to be Nakamura alike to be a GM.

i dont think you put too much effort on what you say.

no matter how much effort the best 1000 in the world putts if they reach the 2700+ elo rating they will simply be taking the place other players have therefore there can only be a few super GMs  same as boxers no matter how good they all are there can only be 10 people who are among the ten best.

Why not just lower the super GM threshold to 300, and then we can all be super GMs right now, without having to bother with all that work? Super cool, eh?

But you're missing the point. If you play all those better people, you're going to lose to them. When you lose to them, your rating is going to go down. People don't make it to 2,700 very often because the 2,700 players consistently beat them.

if the super GMs are 3k rating and you get to be  (lol) 2700+ rating then you are not a super GM  just a GM similar to those who have 2400 rating today.

furthermore if you cant undertand that i really doubt you will ever get to 2k.
