indeed
anyone can be a super GM

Well, as long as you're passionate about something!
i just found this quote on chessquotes :
Alekhine developed as a player much more slowly than most. In his twenties, he was an atrocious chessplayer, and didn't mature until he was well into his thirties
i havent studied Alekhines games though, so i dont know if it is correct, also i dont know how trustworthy the site is with their quotes.

And yet, the Backyard Professor is so sincere, and so anxious to be helpful. I can't bring myself to be too critical, even though he doesn't understand what he's saying. And the scenery is lovely!
I don't mind people like TheBackyardProfessor playing and enjoying chess, but when they act like some sort of expert on the subject and try to teach other, I get annoyed. There are many people out there like that. I know one youtuber who also doesn't understand chess, and he also tries to act like an expert on chess. He's even worse though, because he tries to create an illusion of improvement by posting his "average rating" in the video title. In reality he's just been inflating his rating on chesscube by playing bullet and now he's reached his peak even there.

Kind of ridiculous when you're a punchline in the field you produce instructional videos for.
Or opening a tin of corned beef with a banana. Oh sorry - bit late to the thread...
hey i always open the beef tin with a banana.

This inanity comes up over and over and over, as if merely study and desire could somehow transform the average schlub into Carlsen or Nakamura or Fischer.
If I started a thread on a basketball forum which stated that, given enough practice and desire, anyone could learn to dunk from the foul line, I'd be laughed out of the forum and scorned as an idiot for the rest of my days.
That's the exact same thing as the super-GM idea. Those who can dunk from the foul line are a breed apart--the true supermen of basketball. No amount of training, practice, desire, praise, instruction, or heart is going to get me there. Never. Same with super (or any) GM.
On my home page said a bunch of new posts Sooooooo I actually read about 40 of them - and boy I AM SOOO CONFUSED
- but I basically agree with this fellow
- like that movie where those two british gentleman made that bet about turning a charlady into a social butterflie - - - I am reminded you can
t make a chess master out of a sow's ear
- so basically this thread is all theoretical however I am saddend to realize I maybe can't score the most goals in chess, and kick the most field goals in the N H L or slam dunk in the N F L but I am happy and content to believe that I can out play and beat any Chess Player Ranked 900 or less ( provided he is hungover - - and his wife is screaming at him while he plays
sigh
as people though - chess wise we are just shadows compared to computers and robots - - - like on Futurama when those two robots played chess that one robot won the game by saying something like " check mate " in 50 or whatever moves and he won without MOVING ONE PIECE
- lets see a Human Grand Master match that !!!!
I will go out on a limb and say most people with an innate talent for the game could, with plenty of play and study, achieve FIDE expert level. I can think of one example of a fellow on YouTube who aspires to be a grandmaster and pretends to be a chess instructor. He studies a lot and spends a lot of time reviewing GM games and reading chess literature, Jeremy Silman in particular. Problem is, he has absolutely no grasp of the game and would be fortunate to ever get even to 1200, even if he devoted the rest of his life to the game and nothing else. GM requires extraordinary ability coupled with hard work and study.
You mean TheBackyardProfessor? I dislike his videos with quite a passion.
