I believe you, but once I found the very ignorant question "Isn't this just a bad version of the caro kann?" and it really annoyed me lol. So some people will judge it without knowing it.

It's hard to find an inferior Caro-Kann, it's already practically a forced loss... and this is from someone who's started playing it as their primary defence against e4.

lol the caro kann or the french? Now the Winawer variation is considered suspect sometimes, but I don't think this is true. White probably gets a slight edge, but it's very complex in all ways and far from a forced loss, despite the computer evaluations.

I was talking about the CK. It is my personal belief that perfect play would lead to a win for white, but as perfect play shall never occur, I have no qualms playing it.

Boring?  1.e4 e5 can lead to the Frankenstein-Dracula variation!

Avatar of Raibutai

I'm not too fond of 1. e4 e5, but I realize that it is a very stable opening.

RR: Nytik has odd personal beliefs...

It really doesn't make sense. If anything is a forced loss, it's the sicilian but not the caro kann. Of course all major openings probably lead to a draw with perfect play.

Personally, whether 1. e4e5 is boring depends on what happens after that.  I mean, if it is a four knights game, then i think that is pretty boring, with some exceptions (always exceptions :)).  Generally, i feel that there are too many things that can happen with it so i generally play the scandinavian defense as black.

1.e4 e5 is fine as long as I play white. It is a pain to defend, so I never reply 1...e5.

I like to play both sides of 1 e4 e5. Always gives a good game.

I tend to meet 1. e4 e5 with 2. d4 at the moment. If 2...exd4, then 3. Bc4!? gives an interesting game.

I've hated 1.e4 e5 with a passion ever since learning how to play chess. It's so dull and boring. If I'm watching a Grandmaster game and 1.e4 e5 is played, I lose all interest in the game.

If my opponent plays 1.e4, I usually play 1...e6 (the French), but sometimes 1...d5 (the Scandanavian), and occasionally 1...c5 (the Sicilian).

As White I never play 1.e4. Usually it's 1.d4, but sometimes 1.Nf3, and occasionally 1.c4.

1.e4 e5 is a real pet peeve of mine, and I'm curious of whether anyone agrees with me here. :D

dull and boring? how about the Latvian: e4 e5 nf3 f5!? is one of the most exciting openings in the history of chess!

Sicilian's a forced loss...for who? Please  show me the line(s).

Don't worry schachgeek, it's probably not. I'm just entertaining the ideas that somewhere down the line some openings may or may not  be almost lost (like maybe the KID, which I in fact play), just that nobody is going to find them anytime soon! But you have to think "one attack is probably faster". Sorry, no lines, just a thought Tongue out

But the point is the sicilian would be lost before the CK if the sicilian is the one allowing a big kingside attack. I remember someone saying the CK is like a forced loss or something.

The Italian can be kind of boring, but there are a lot of other options with e4 e5.

Avatar of ASpieboy

I HATE e4 d5 though.

Avatar of Elubas

So are people talking about e4 e5 from the white or black side? Because from the black side it could probably indeed get boring.

Avatar of brfc

i love e4 e5, as I can play my super duper opening trick, king's gambitos!

Avatar of Atos

1. e4 e5 has many interesting lines, gambits and others. If the white player hasnt got much imagination and goes for something like giuoco pianissimo then that can be a little boring but the black has fairly easy equality. (1. d4 doesnt lack such drawish lines either.) The black player needs to be flexible and have a fair amount of opening knowledge if they are going to answer 1. e4 with 1....e5.

Avatar of king_warrior

i play e4 as white, and i don't mind if my oponent plays ...2.e5. But here on chess.com i almost never play ...2.e5 becouse i cannot defend myself that way. As black i prefer ...2.c6 or ...2.c5.

Avatar of jpd303

open games can be ok, i prefer to watch than play that type of position.  i would agree that after e4 e5 nf3 nc6 the game is already boring unless white chooses the scotch.  the italian game and the spanish game are quite overplayed im my humble opinion.
