Anyone know strategic ways to beat your opponent
are you playing against a computer or person? I usually play against a computer because I don't know anyone my level that I could play with. Also, when I use the chess game that comes with windows 7 I use a take back function. If I make a mistake I can take it back and work from there. I try to use this as a learning tool but I don't feel I am improving. If you go to a club that may help, there may be someone there that is willing to help a beginner. I am working my way through the lessons, drills and tactics. Some of the tactics are confusing, I am not sure what I am supposed to do and when I look at the solution it makes no sense. Play against a computer and put it on a low setting. That way, there will be opportunities for you to see things like tactics you could use and practice. This is what I do.
Good luck!
Ok then you're not analyzing your games effectively. How much time do spend on analyzing your games?
You're simply making all of the mistakes that beginners make. Learn general opening principles, learn basic tactics, etc. There are plenty of threads here that discuss those items.
You need to be careful when you play so you don't lose pieces or pawns, every pawn is important. Play slow but use your clock time effectively so you don't run out of time. Analyze the games you lose with a computer program. Do the tactics and chess mentor and watch the videos given in this website. Go to a chess club since its great fun to find a patzer and chop him up!
Keep playing and soon your rating will get to a point where you are matched with opponents of similar skill.
As thegreat_patzer said, play longer games. Is easier to think and improve your chess with 30 minutes game.
You have to learn the fundamentals. I started with "Winning chess strategy for kids" and it helped me a lot.
You join the site at a predetermined rating set at a middling level. If you are already a very experienced player you win a number of games and reach a more realistic rating. similarly with someone like yourself who is just beginning. You must expect to lose a few games until your taing reaches a more realistic level. as you come to play against other players who do not have a great deal of experience you can expect to win and lose in a more equal fashion.
Chess is about ninety five per cent (or rather more) tactics and the rest strategy. So focus on tactics. Do the tactics puzzles on the site each day. As you gain experience you will recognise more tactical opportunities and fend off your opponents tactical plans more often.
