Think it probably a viable approach for reasonably competent players.
An hour looking at the grunfeld and choosing some of the slightly lesser lines that score well already feel am getting a decent idea of strategy. Think an hour a day for a few weeks and some daily games in the defence and will soon be up to speed. Supplemented with checking out chess publishing forum to see which lines are currently causing trouble and job done.
