I have not improved "alot"[sic] from his books.
Anyone out there who has improved alot as a result of reading Silman's books?
I personally think his Imbalances way of thinking though helpful takes too much time off the clock.I would prefer some GM way of thinking ie Chess Prophalaxis
I learned about allot from other books; a lot was something already known.
His books crystallized ideas that I held without clarity. That was useful. I remember a handful of games when Silman's words echoed in my mind as I played, and in a few cases these words guided me to the correct plan and a win.
I doubt he's a master, but he surely improved with Silman's advice and used it a lot. If you watch his "DANG BLUNDER!" video you will see that he is clearly not a master, calling a position "winning" for black even though all white has to do to secure an easy win is get his king safe (which he didn't).
The Backyard Professor became a master (I think) reading Silman's books.
The "Backyard Professor" has been clobbered by players who finish near the middle of the pack in tournaments in my town (C players). I doubt that he is D Class.
Whether I've improved much with the help of Silman's books or not I don't know, but probably. Most importantly I loved reading them. However if that nutcase of a pretend professor got his strength from Silman's books then I must assume the books are worthless. That guy will become a master when pigs can fly lol...

Did he ever even pass 1000?

Nope he was to busy hanging pieces while claiming an advantage...

Backyard Professor on YouTube cracks me up lol...he seems to really think he will the next Garry Kasparov.I like his enthusiasm though.May be he will one day.Back to Silman, his books are pretty awesome and now I'm reading The Amateurs Mind in between doing tactics.
It says he only played 9 games & his provisional is 747. If thats the right one, from Idaho. This is his official uscf otb rating.
I liked both Reasses & Amatuers Mind. I recently got his endgame book & the strategy one but I havent read those. As far as has it helped or not, I havent really got back into tournament play enough to find out yet.
backyard professor is interesting to listen to. Give the man credit for devoting alot of time and energy in providing free videos.
Judging by the Backyard Professor's videos, it seems like he has improved greatly from being an intermediate, probably 1500 level player to at least 1900 over the past couple years. He's certainly making improvements in his chess and I'm sure in another year he'll be a master.

It seems to me that you were stoned while watching his video.
The guy is the perfect chess clown, and nothing more than that.
