Are blitz games and bullet games essential in improvement?

I'm not a fan of shorter time controls, but I want to improve. I've noticed that lots of strong players play blitz and/or bullet, so I just want to ask if playing at these time controls will help me improve my game? And how?

Blitz and bullet are not essential in improvement, they are detrimental to improvement as they breed bad habits: playing too fast and too superficial.

Strong players play blitz and bullet for fun and also for fear of engine assisted cheating.

The best way to improve is to play 15|10 with subsequent analysis of all your lost games.

Pretty much all the fast improving chess kids I've seen (the ones with titles) have played a lot of blitz and bullet... but that's a little misleading.

It's misleading first of all because they're also spending a lot of time studying and playing in OTB tournaments (where games can last many hours). They're also a bit of a chess addict... they typically play all sorts of time controls and variants.

It's also misleading because we don't know if the kids would improve even faster without speed games (and I'm sure some people would make some reasonable arguments that this is the case).

Anyway, the answer to your title is:  no

Get a well regarded and classic book on strategy
And one on endgames

Solve a lot of tactic puzzles

Look at a few GM games every day. Don't try to understand every move. Pick one move or lesson you liked from the game. Write it down. As your list of interesting games / positions grows, you can go back and reference them whenever you want to learn about a certain kind of attack, or endgame, or strategy.

Play long games. Review your games. Don't worry about every little mistake. Pick one major mistake you want to try to avoid in the future. Write it down. As your list of mistakes grows, you can see what your most common errors are and where you'd benefit from focusing.

Thanks a bunch!

It can still help you improve, but I definitely recommend long time control (>10 minutes on each side)

I play mostly G30 and 15/10, though I guess I have a case of the blunderitis and that's my weakness lol

You can forget about b&b until you reach a certain skill/ level. Blitz is just for fun, and bullet is wankery.
