everyone is different and people plateu at different ratings. however, it stands true that as you get stronger the more difficult it is to improve.
Are some ratings levels more prone to plateaus?
Everybody plateaus sooner or later. Most soon, few late.
A plateau indicates that you are no longer able to recognise and cure your mistakes and thus keep repeating the same mistakes.
To break through a plateau you have to candidly and thoroughly analyse your lost games.
A coach can help, but in the end you have to do it yourself.
I expect that all of us who have played for a long time and gradually increased our skills and rating levels have experienced the occasional, dreaded plateau along the way, where you simply hold still in your progress for a really long time, such as a year or more, even though you are continuing to work and practice, etc.
I am currently stuck in the range between 1550 and 1620. I started wondering the other day if this level is a common plateau for people. And then I had this larger question: Are certain ranges of rating-level more prone to plateau than others? I would not be surprised to learn that the 2000 mark, for instance, is a really, really difficult barrier to break through, even for those who have reached 1900.
Can those who are rated above 2000 state at which levels they hit a plateau in their own journey?
