I would not be surprised if certain types of parrotts could play a bit of chess.

Very smart and they have enough dexterity to move the pieces.

Same thing for some types of crows or ravens.

We have to remember that intelligence is not a objective standard. Different animals evolved using different survival methods and so developed a wide range of skills. I think chess is a game very specific to abilities that are unique in human. For us it has become a kind of benchmark for genius. But there are probably a lot of games other animals play that we would suck at haha. Elephants destroy humans at memory. Also they can smell quantity. They can tell the difference between one peanut and ten just by using their trunk (nose). So another very interesting question might be, how can we change or adjust the game of chess so that other animals can understand it?
