Are there Openings I should never ever play?

Like Anderssen's, Barnes, etc.?

First, you don't have 100% say so over the opening. You can't decide to play an opening. Both you and your open create the opening together. Second, the openings considered more difficult will come up when higher level players play. If low level players play an odd opening it will leave book quickly and you won't see it as part of a master's database.

So, you play it to test your chess skills. How well can you play that opening against another low level player. If you are playing to win and move up the ranks, then you should play a common opening and learn that well.

Anderssen 1 a3 or even Barnes 1 f3 are not that bad. Grob 1 g4 is worse.
Stay away from all openings with 'Gambit' in their names.

#3, and Queen's gambit?

I don't recommend this one, for instance.

I think the Anderssen or Grob might be the worse.

You can play reverse najdorf up a move as white, with anderssen. I have good success with that.

alot of master anderssen games are reverse najdorfs.

soo i won't say its even close to the grobbin' time level

Actually bird's opening is very bad opening but then u can go with the grobs opening, i have played it against 800+ rated players and won! well its up to u though at the end of the day to decide which u want to use and dont want to use

Avatar of Oleg_Kovalcuk

Grob can also be played as a gambit where its kinda fun?

I'd say you SHOULD some day give it a try, hereby not that bad.

Bird 1 f4 is not that bad: it is a Dutch Defense with an extra tempo.
GM Larsen used to play it at top GM level.

1 h3 is not that bad. The late IM Basman used to play it regularly against masters and grandmasters in over the board classical games, e.g. the British Championship. He even played 1 d4 h6 as black. The opening does not matter below top grandmaster level. You do not win or lose because of the opening, but because of tactical errors. That is even more true in fast time controls. That is why Carlsen plays all kinds of weird stuff in blitz and rapid.

4...Bc8 is passive. Better 4...e6.

"and Queen's gambit?"

++ Yes, Queen's Gambit is the exception that confirms the rule: it is fully sound.

Avatar of Agrolucario35

Bro tbh whichever opening u use it dosent matter because we know how to play chess. Also Magnus plays all kind of weird stuff because he likes to troll his opponents by using weird openings and remember he is the "endgame virtuoso"

Avatar of Agrolucario35

Also the examples of Magnus or other GMs using weird openings is that they have already crossed the level of following the basic principles of chess. Also sometimes if ur not careful then u can get checkmated like what happened in this game yesterday.. A GM wanted to troll his opponent but then ended up being trolled:

Here is an example of IM Basman winning with 1 h3 in the Lloyds Bank Masters Tournament, classical time control.

By openings I should never play, I mean openings in which my opponent can unequivocally put me in a bad position no matter what I play.
