It is said that 'just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you.'  ;-)

Chess as a game involves planning ahead and making delicious that will help you in the future, so naturally, people who have a natural compulsion to make delicious to plan for anything would be good at chess.

Psychiatrist and chess grandmaster Dr. Reuben Fine stated in The Psychology of the Chess Player that paranoia occurs more in chess players.
The most famous case was Akiba Rubinstein, who was admitted and died in a mental asylum.

Paranoia is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of delusion and irrationality.[1]Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory, or beliefs of conspiracy concerning a perceived threat towards oneself (e.g. "Everyone is out to get me"). Paranoia is distinct from phobias, which also involve irrational fear, but usually no blame. Making false accusations and the general distrust of others also frequently accompany paranoia. For example, an incident most people would view as an accident or coincidence, a paranoid person might believe was intentional.

It isn't a thought process. More like a state of mind. It isn't distinct from phobias, which might be thought to be a kind of compartmentalising of paranoia. Paranoia shouldn't be confused with either anxiety or with closely focussing on possible problems before they arrive. Fischer was paranoic but Kasparov isn't, since he is right to protect himself from possible attacks.
