I understand this sometimes you feel you have more control over the opening as black, however if you're playing against a white player who knows what they're doing it isn't really the case.
I think this is also why stuff like the English and Reti openings appeal to many white players, they take alot of black's prep out of the equation and basically dictate to a fair extent the type of position you're going to end up with.

I blunder away like a moron and self-destruct regardless of wether I play black or white. But I think I play better as white than black ( the english opening has helped a lot ).
1. e4 is tough because black has many options which lead to totally different positions. 1. d4 is not far behind in this regard.
1. c4 gives the white player a bit more control over the nature of the position imo, 1. Nf3 even moreso.
People say openings are overrated but when you find an opening that you really like and enjoy playing it makes a big difference to your game imo, my results against 1. d4 (when I'm black) went way up when I discovered the Semi-Slav for example, not because I know the theory just because I just have a feel for the resulting positions more than other d4 openings.
I am better with white, I know more opening traps with white, though I do enjoy playing some risky lines with black, such as the Latvian.
my winning % for blakc in USCF is insane, like 65%. one of the reason's is i play nf6 against e4 always. it scares the heck out of my oppoenents. against d4 i play the king's indian defense. i know black's openings better then i know white's. i purposely played only black for 1 year straight on icc. the idea was that i would become stronger when i got the black pieces, but it kind of backfired. here i only play quick games and or some reason have a higher winning % with white pieces. it is because of the short timed games that people play online.
btw, you are better as black
this is silly, but think about this, white can be mated in two moves, but black can't. white has the first oppurtunity to make the first mistake.

Today, we know that white has a small edge, a tempo. That tempo can mean everything in a game. The question isn't silly as such.
It's like people who master the kings indian and work with it well, we know today that the kings indian for black, white actually has the advantage, albeit a small one.
I am much better as black because I like choosing the opening I know that I as black do not have complete control of the opening of the game but somehow I feel better as black, strange as it may be. It may all be in my head but never the less I win almost 10 times as many games as black then I do as white.
