Are you supposed to accept a rematch offer on live chess?

You don't have to, and you're not being a jerk or sore loser if you don't

Yes. The only question move vital is whether saying "gg" after a game shows arrogance!

Is it more arrogant to offer a rematch after you've won or to refuse one after you've crushed a patzer? That's the vital question.

Do you screen your rematch offers, only granting them to those who say "gg" after a blunderfest.

I've never thought about it like a lot of people have. I've never asked for a rematch because I guess I'm just lucky. All the people that I've wanted to play again ask me first. But if I get asked and dont want to play again I always respond first before leaving.

Once, I beat someone in live chess. He offered me in a rematch, I accepted, and proceeded to beat him again. He offered another rematch, and I, wanting to play someone else, declined the offer. I played a few more games, went offline, and found a note on my wall that said "runner" from the person who sent me the rematch offer which I declined.

Now, although it might not seem like it, I've been on this sight for approx. 3 years now (I've closed my other account due to me falling behind in grades), and from what I've observed within that time (mainly notes on other member's walls), it seems to be rude or cowardly to decline a rematch offer. This, to me, makes zero sense: I want to play someone else, how does that make me a coward?

Does anyone have any experience/insight on this topic? I simply just do not understand the "harm" or "disrespect" in not taking a rematch offer.

"It seems to be rude or cowardly". Just because others are stupid and offensive doesn't make you rude or cowardly. There is no rule, convention, or etiquette requiring one to accept a rematch unless previously agreed.

I ussually accept a rematach, unless I don't have the time, but it's totally up to you.

i gave them free chess lessons

so they should be happy.

if they don't want to have more free chess lessons maybe they are not having a low self esteem.  it could be because they want to get free chess lessons from someone else.

they guys wore makeup because of low self esteem

i usually say "thanks" after the game is over

If I win and my opponent asks for a rematch I invariably accept. If I lose and my opponent asks for a rematch I invariably decline.

My opinion is that it's up to the loser to ask for a rematch. In a boxing match, the winner never asks for a rematch, right?

The keyword is "free". Why pay for something that somebody else offers for free?

Quality. That's the bottom line for some people. Free services rarely match the quality of those that are not free.

Seems to me that you have it backwards. If you win, it is courteous to offer a rematch. A loser should not have to beg for a rematch.

saying "thanks" is obviously more polite and less arrogant than saying "gg"

The only place "gg" is taken as an insult is online.  That should tell you something.

I don't see the point in playing a rematch just to be nice. If I like the person's playing style, I'll accept a rematch if they offer one or very occasionally I'll ask for a rematch myself. Also if somebody is nice in the chat I'll be more likely to play them more games. For all of the people who might call me a runner, I've turned off my profile comments to strangers so that only friendly fellow chess players or friends from other websites can comment.

are you a runner?

In some ways, you could call me that. :P

I don't only play with ONLY one set of pieces (like some runners) and I will always finish games (only lost one so far by abandonement because my wifi dropped out for more than 20 mins :/).

But my strategy in bullet and some forms of blitz is to play simply on time. And I don't play too many rematches because I prefer to play a wide variety of people.

It's a valid strategy. I don't cheat. It may frustrate when I win with a king and a pawn against two rooks a knight a bishop and four pawns. But even with doing this time strategy, I've started to checkmate people along the way. It does improve my game.

Not bad. I prefer running programs such as Inkscape, Firefox, C#, and FL Studio. :P
