No, I'm not sure, but then I'm not really that big of a student of chess history.

what are you saying people?  we have hundreds of threads here started by indians claiming/confirming indian invention of chess.  this will be so heartbreaking.

Of course chess comes from india. It was first named as Chaturanga. The pieces used to come from south India. It spread to europe following the arabic invasion.

yes it did come from india. but the original game was chaturanga which was a 4 player game like ludo, the ultimate board game which is really the masterpiece for training a king or in the now a day vocabulary, a leader. its history goes way back to the golden days of india, the 1st 10 centuries, showing which we indians claim to be great. but that was not chess, when india was colonised by england, they adopted this game, added few other rules, and improvised(deteriorated) the game making it the chess we know today. now today we don't know how chaturanga is played but we know of the board they used to use to play the game (from the ancient structures).

its better if you don't refuse it when you really don't know much

i would contest that what many posts argue about here on chess.com is the en passant and therefore it is the most defining feature of today's chess.  this was made a rule by the Italians.

Actually there are many French scholars who believe that the earliest form of chess originated in France by Cro-Magno.

Images in the Lascaux Cave was discovered by 18-year-old Marcel Ravidat appear to show  Knights /horses stepping on chessboard like geometric shapes.(satire)

Post #9 is spot on. Chess does trace it's roots to India via Chaturanga. Furthermore, I have researched this topic before and have given lectures on this topic as well. It is worthy to note that many games are similar in nature to chess; however, it should also be noted that among similarities there are differences too. Chaturanga is not chess - it is the origin of chess (at least closest traced game corresponding to chess). Then again though, even chess is not chess wink.png meaning that "ancient" chess is nothing like "modern" play; sure computers influenced the game greatly, but it is deeper than that. It is really a different game, chess did not even get rules like castling until after the game spread to Europe. Even subtle rule changes like this changes the nature of the game greatly.
