Entry Fee:
- $1,000 before July 31, 2014
- $1,500 from August 1 through October 8, 2014
- $2,000 from October 9 through 3:30 p.m. October 10, 2014
Entry Fee:
...Isn't this different? I thought I read that the entrance fee doubles long before "Three or four days before the tournament".
The entry fee goes up $500 on Aug 1, and doubles on Oct 9. However, they can always "re-evaluate" their entry fee structure.

Yes, I'm pretty sure a re-evaluation is on the cards.

Don't count on the re-evaluation of entree fees by MC Team. These guys are serious about what they are saying and what they are doing. Unless an overwhelming quest from all around the world happens (which is very unlikely) - there is no reason they will "not increase" the entree fee as per the previous announcement.

I wasn't talking specifically about entry fees.

Like, for example, that they will cancel the tournament if there aren't 1,000 players by the end of...? May, was it?
Iron, I was also thinking about that, but then it said:
“The organizers reserve the right to cancel the tournament if 1,500 participants are not registered by March 31, 2014.”
and then the answer that you will get will be:
"It never said that they were going to cancel, it means that they were going to evaluate, and they decided to continue with the project for the future of chess, isn´t that great????"

It certainly demonstrates some fuzzy planning.
>These guys are serious about what they are saying and what they are doing.<
Well they are certainly serious about losing $800,000. And that's if they get about 200 more entrants. If not, the "million" in Millionaire Chess will be how much was written off as a loss.
Go big or go home indeed. A bit of both, methinks.
>It certainly demonstrates some fuzzy planning.<
More likely some hefty swigs from the kool-aid jug, after which everyone got all sparkly and convinced themselves that US chess players would come stampeding to the registration site.
Apparently the organizers haven't been hanging around many chess opens these days, because a quick look around the room can tell you a lot about just how much disposable income is there for the picking...very little, actually.

Fair enough...
Well, the buzz for MC has died in the summer heat. The entry fee goes up in two weeks, which means it's effectively closing, and things will proceed quietly from here on out.
The tournament will take place, there will be a modest bit of coverage from the witless USCF (months later, since their lead times are still mired in the 1980s), the organizers will lose their barrel of Franklins, and that will be that.
Yeah, they should have cancelled early on. Pride goeth, as they say. Oh well, see you at the next Goichberg-a-rama.
Haven't posted in here in a while, but it looks like their preregistrations have increased quite a bit since I last checked.
compared to pro poker with 10K and 15K buy-ins and in rare cases much higher, 1K is nothing. in fact my cousin won one of these tournaments a few weeks ago in vegas (which is funny b/c he was considering retiring of poker recently), netted about 350K or so. you do not read complaints about high stakes chess about the philly open or world open where the pay-in to prize ratio is far more ridiculous.
i tend to think detractors of the chess vegas tournament do not like the tournament because they feel that they cannot afford to play and thus react emotionally in fora.
This pretty much sums it up.
> but it looks like their preregistrations have increased quite a bit since I last checked.<
Really? All the way up to 120?
>i tend to think detractors of the chess vegas tournament do not like the tournament because they feel that they cannot afford to play and thus react emotionally in fora.<
You are wrong, but this "sour grapes" accusation is a classic debate dodge. It requires little forethought, it attacks the poster and not his ideas, and pronounces any discussion moot by calling the poster's motives into question.
It's like telling a movie critic that they don't like a movie because they can't direct one themselves. Therefore, discussing the flaws of the movie is pointless.
Like in chess, you need to unlearn this easy but fruitless pattern of thinking :)
It doesn't really matter. MC has already failed. Post-mortem as you will. The registration list tells the sullen tale.

I'm not sure that advance registrations are any kind of an indicator. I was following the registration for the World Open. Three or four days before the tournament, there were about 600 entrants. The total number of entrants was about 1100.
