ha! I think we're overwhelming him. I and another asked about $$$; and how you pay for coaches, travel, etc before your all famous and stuff.
if you can handle up a follow up on the coaches... How important are they to you and other strong GM's. would you say that the top elite are SO good that coaches are more like seconds and not neccesarily essential for further improvement- or are coaches a critical factor in how improves and who doesn't? BTW, Kasporov is for hire; I think... have you worked with him.
I thought there were other questions about coaches- so whatever you wanted to address, ty...
There seems to be some disagreement about studying tactics vs studying opening lines. I think for players at my level tactics are most important. I learn opening principles and a few moves of some lines but I don't spend much time memorizing anything. I think tactics are most important for lower level players trying to get better. What do you think?
Thanks for you willingness to help us all out and good luck in your career. (wish I could be a pro chess player :)
I tend to agree myself but at a certain point you get diminishing returns and you better try something else. Anyone can eventually get good at tactics and calculation. It's a bit harder to get out of your comfort zone and study middlegames/endgames/stylistic ideas that are different than your own.
BTW guys i won't be analyzing anyones games or doing more personal stuff like that. more fun/casual questions please!
What do you think of GM Baadur Jobava? Do you think he can crack the top ten with his strange/unorthodox play?
Since people at the GM level usually know when they're beat and resign, do you miss getting awesome checkmates or is it just as satisfying to know how the forced mates would play out in your mind?
i kil in da threds liek i kil in da beds
hopefully the staff can kill your account soon.
GM Soltis says, "One explanation for the wall is that most players got to where they are by learning how to not lose. When two 1700 players meet over the board, one will typically self-destruct. Not in the opening, as an 1100 player would, but by move 40, if not 30. As a result, many players can reach 1900 strength simply by not blundering."
Do you think there is a difference between"learning not to lose" and "learning to win"? Or is improvement beyond 1900 just the continued elimination of mistakes and inducing of mistakes by your opponent?
Do you think it is accurate to say that Carlsen makes moves that give his opponent more opportunities to make mistakes rather than just "playing the best move"?
Why is the Winawer rarely played nowadays by elite (2650+) players?
Bishop pair + modern computer preparation gives White concrete lines with a good chance of a real advantage.
Two part question.
1.- (unrelated) What happened to MrBil, he was a strong Canadian player on many Canadian groups/teams and now has account closed.
2.- If Carlsen gave you a knight advantage do you think you could convert it?
Thanks in advance.
1.Don't know
2. Yes, without any difficulty.
How do you sustain a reasonable lifestyle as a professional chess player who isnt among the worlds elite?
Im assuming you coach? Are you writing books as well?
Playing for teams in Europe who pay you to play. Otherwise some coaching and article writing.
who is the hottest chess player you've played with?
Haven't played with many. I'd say Tania Sachdev
Who do you think the next world champion will be?
Don't know! I don't think it will be a current elite player. Carlsen will reign for a while.
When calculating, I struggle to acheive a mental image of the board position after a few moves. What study techniques do you recommend to improvr board visualisation?
Read chess books without a board. Keep exercising your brain and you'll eventually see deeper/get better.
You opened your heart thus...
Special diet during a tournament?
Is your tournament preparation towards opponents or generally refreshing your openings?
Your major income as a professional player? (only tournament prizes, + coaching)
A girlfriend?
Do you really believe to enter top-10, 25, 50, 100?
Your chess idol? Or a player who mostly influenced you
1. No special diet but I tend to be safe and eat Western food.
2. Refreshing openings unless it is a round-robin.
3.Answered shortly above.
4. Currently single.
5. Top 50 eventual goal (2700+) Yes, I think I will.
6. Don't have a clear favorite- studied most of them with an open mind. But my biggest chess influence is definitely Michael Adams.
