Average rating by country

Hi there,

I was following the thread relating to when the site would hit 150,000 registered users and ended uplooking at the membership by country.

One of the stats here was the average rating for each country.  Scrolling down through this, I noticed that some countries had substantially higher average than others, so I picked up on Samoa, average rating of 1,969.

At first glance this eemed reasonable, as there are only ten memebers from Samoa and hence I surmised a small player base who were very interested in chess.  Given there were only tem members I took the time to check out the profile for each member and this is what I found.

4 members have no rating.

Of the 6 members with a rating the average is 1,246 with the highest being 1,969, incidentally the exact same number given for the average user rating.

Is this a glitch in the system or is there some other methodology at use here, such as minimum number of games required before the rating is included in the calculation, or is it a simple glitch in the system?

 Thanks

Evil H

Are you sure you didnt confuse the average rating with the highest rated player from that country??

Sorry, my calculations from my original post are there for all to see, thought it was obvious?

I think the average rating is the same as the top player because every other player has played less than 5 games and have no official rating. When working out the average of the country they will probably use a weight values to account for the accuracy of the ratings of each member. Since only one member has played a decent number of games, effectively the weight value for him will be 1 and the rest 0.

Rating put downs are out of order, at least until I'm rated 2999.

Sorry, it wasn't a rating put down, it was actually praise for his rating and surprise at his response based upon that.

On www.fide.com you can find listed the top 100 players of many countries and the average rating of each country. The average is based on the top 10 in each country I believe.

Thanks Reb, but my query specifically relates to the calculation on this site.

Belgrade at 1,969 has 41 games under his belt with gunner1 being next at 5 games and a rating of 836.  If it is indeed weighted average as seems likely, then it would seem that you need more than 5 games to be included in the calculation.  As all the other players have one game or less and assuming a minimum game requirement, then a combination of the above two would give 1,846 hence my assumption that 5 games must not be enough.

It is "piss-weak" for someone to ask.  But when this thread appeared there where two other threads discussing resignation on the first page.

Maybe there ought to be a resignation forum :)

Extract from a post using the same word as me, but which remained uncensored!!!

It's not just South Africa that has poor people.  I live in the United States and am too broke to buy a membership.  Do you recall the people sleeping on the pavement outside the bar when you paid $200 US to get trashed?  That's the lower class.  As it turns out, we're everywhere.  Some people can't piss away their money.

And another one, I can in fact find hundreds on the site, so why am I the only one censored?
