You will need:
1. Good Computer processor ( 4.0GHz Processor) would be ideal
2. Scid(scid.sourceforge.net/), which is a good chess program that is free
3. http://www.sdchess.ru/Engines_UCI_top.htm (Download one of these engines)
4. Couple endgame books and a chess book that you will enjoy. My favorite chess book is "What it takes to become a Chess Master".
Engine- is my most used method of studying chess; After a game, i open Houdini, which is my personal favorite chess engine. I go through each move and see how the move order differs. My personal goal is to play like an engine, though other's may confuse it for cheating or impossible. How is it possible to play like a 3100 engine? Devote time to openings specifically designed to be boring with limited chances for counterplay. This boring line will be your primary weapon against your opponents, offering you optimal chances of not blundering. Your surprise weapon will be the opening line that contains several traps which deviates from the opening mainlines and is something highly analyzed by the computer. My surprise weapon is somewhat like the Catalan but it is deadly and one that I've had a lot of success with. In fact, I haven't lost to anyone above me using this highly analyzed line.
Book- For the endgame book, take out your actual chess set and understand the move orders that the author shows. It may be boring but it may prove beneficial later on. Another way to study endgames is to plug it into the engine as well. Chess is all about understanding important concepts and applying them.
If you guys simply try to understand the string of lines that the chess engine shows, take the time to understand why this one particular move is better than the other.
Everyone is capable of getting to master and it doesn't have to be so much of talent but logic and reasoning. Calculation can only get you so far but intuition and a chess player's understanding of a chess game will lead you to victory.
The reason why I prefer SCID over Houdini Pro or Deep Fritz is because the computer analysis only shows a string of 1 or 2 moves rather than Deep Fritz, which consumes a lot of your computer's memory.
