I'm too poor to get a book about chess, so until someone decides it would make a good present for me on Christmas/my birthday, I'm stuck with Google and carefully analysing all the games I play.

Couple of tips. Sign up for basic membership, it's cheap, watch the International Master Rensch videos, great help and also play the tactis trainer on this site. Free members get 3 per day free, paid up get 25 per day. These are computer controlled and match the training to your skill level. Above all, play and enjoy. Whether you win or lose is not that important, you get something out of every game !!!

Have two opening moves for white and two for black and study them religiously, play them daily for a few weeks and see how opponents react to them.

Also, get used to using Bishops/Knights consitently and well.

As you get better, you will start developing your Rooks earlier to be more useful before the end game.

Learn to defend well.

Learn to be patient (unless its Blitz).

Never give up just because you lose a queen in the first few moves. Learnt to win when at a disadvantage - you will feel awesome when you do win and it will help you become more efficient.

Don't be afraid of playing stronger players, or losing to weaker ones. We've all lost many games to either.

Basics: Try and move each piece only once until they are all in the game, except rooks. Castle as early as you can to free up the rooks. Try and focus on centre control of board. Queen comes later, otherwise you spend all your time saving the queen from attack. Although I have lost some games where the other player moved his queen out in the 2nd move, but these were my mistakes. Play the 3 free tactics trainers every day !!

used bookstores/thrift stores have cheap chess books -- any book you use is better than nothing!  I paid $1.48 (price of a large coke) for 1946 Common Sense in Chess by Lasker.

use the free analyzer on chess.com and or download free winboard to

review each game you play - review a game you played last month.  you can see:

            what you missed

what worked or didn't for you

            what worked for opp

very good chess site is exeterchessclub.org.uk lots of game collections to download

One of the things that helped me out tremendously was chess puzzles. I was good until I lost my queen. My problem was getting other pieces into the logic. Once I got a handle on that my points went well above 1500. Always challenge your mind with non chess challenges. This helps your ability to think ahead. Come up with a system 1,2,3.....why did he move there, what will the board look like in 2,3,4,5  moves, which leave me in the best position. Don't move the queen out until the nights are taken care of. Remember nights eat queens for lunch. The first 20 moves are all about who controls the center 4 squares. Give yourself time and be patient with yourself. The hardest thing for me was practicing to actually see the pieces where they would be and clearing the rest out of your mind.

Good luck

when it seem too easy, it most probably is not the way to go. a piece is much more valuable when it is in a position af attack and defence simultaneously! (they must link one another and support each other) watch out for cramped positions, isolation of a piece. don't bring out your queen to quickly, else the opponent will use her value to develop his pieces, while you just keep defending her.

specialise in an attack, for example, lure your opponent into a position where you can play your game, even if you need to sacrifice pieces to lure him in.

watch out for weakening your position, by pushing pawns, rather move your king if you have to do something, sometimes its a waiting game, where you must give the opponent a chance to make a mistake.

but the secret is to value position...a pawn can be more valuable than a queen, depending on its position! your aim is to have each piece to have the positional value of a queen! you will outplay your opponent, if you control space!

and that is what chess is all about. Its about control, and value. If your pieces occupy the correct space, then you will win, always!

It's a really great idea to get a premium chess.com membership and use the training and lessons on chess.com, they are great.  Anyone who can afford a computer should be able to afford a membership.

Learn from your mistake pal..

Avatar of iksarol

there is really only one thing you can do to get better , play a lot , ill say start with 1000 games here with no less than 10 minutes time in your clock, youll start geting your mistakes fast after that  use only e4 and use no more than 3 book moves in your opening  since you have no idea what the plan is for the opening you are using .

Play chess if you are motivated..... Use your experienced as a counterattack

ALWAYS blunder-check your moves. I can't tell you how many times I've let my queen be captured by accident.

If you can't afford to spend money on chess books, there are some classic works available online for free.  Here is one of the most famous chess books ever written.
