I would prefer disconnection = automatic forfeit, at end of day internet is much better around the world, so most disconnections are for the reason you say.
Bad behaviour
There are some people who intentionally get "disconnected" when they are going to lose, and make the opposite party wait for the whole remaining time and get bored....this is very bad behaviour...there should be some option to block such people....This is very important because I have seen this behaviour with a lot and lot of people....
There is a "Fair Play Policy".

I assume you have to Report Abuse here http://support.chess.com/Tickets/Submit and if the player is reported enough there could be sanctions.
Yeah, people disconnecting intentionally. Its very annoying. I used to play at instantchess.com, most of the time people do it.
How can you tell the difference between intentional and unintentional disconnects? It's not that I don't believe some players are intentionally disconnecting, but how does their opponent know for sure? And how would the management here ascertain the difference between intentional and unintentional disconnects?
Erik has announced they're working on solution to this. Don't forget though, not everyone who disconnects does it on purpose.
This was played in live chess. My internet stoped working for some reason, and I lost. I was completly winning, just take a look and you will agree.

I have the opposite problem, sometimes i disconnect when I am really winning. At another site where I played chess, they had a disconnection-timer. This was a timer that allowed you to be disconnected for max 2 minutes, otherwise you lose. The good thing is that it doesnt affect your game-clock, which can be annoying when you are winning and disconnecting... Maybe an idea?

Further, if all disconnections were immediately punished by game forfeiture, then Chess.com would receive a deluge of bitter complaints (I mean, much more than they already receive) that games were forfeited due to a disconnection that was no fault of their (the players') own. Even my awesome Internet connection goes out once in a while.

+1. Where I am we have bad internet connection. You can imagine how much more annoyance that would be for me being that chess.com isn't the only site that I have trouble staying connected to, at times.
I still go for disconnection = forfeit, seriously I reckon about 85% of disconnections are because the person is getting beat, similar if you play online at say Fifa 2011, people disconnect when they lose a goal, its so obvious, so Fifa makes them forfeit the match.
If concerned about complaints, then how about a system where people can seek games that are only what they want, for example someone could seek a 3 min blitz with disconnect protect on, this is because these two players cant be bothered with the hassle of it all, and know they have stable connections, almost everyone legitimate will seek this way, there will be less games with the protection off, but that option is still viable for people who want to play that way.
I would be much more interested playing a longer standard knowing if the person disconnects least I am getting the win for my time and effort. That could be a possible easy solution.

Looks like players do not get to participate in the hunt.
"Fair Play & Good Sportsmanship!:
Similar to how members with a high echess time-out ratio get restricted from tournaments, we have implemented something to discourage poor sportsmanship in Live!
As you may know, we have a Fair Play Policy. Players who are detected to be ignoring that policy by wilfully disconnecting from (or just ceasing to play in) a significant percentage of games will be cautioned by a system pop-up. "

once you make a rule that says disconnect = automatic forfit people are just going to walking away from the computer and lose on time doing almost the same thing. then we can't make a rule about that because they might be thinking for a very very long time.

which is exactly what you have just done! pathetic.
There are two things I hate:
1) When people disconnect.
2) When my internet messes up so I disconnect.
Solution: Invent better internet that doesn't do this. (easy, right?)

it is a part of a losing behavior, one must understand a person who cannot accept his defeat, by getting you bored he might as well have win and theres a stalemate between the two of you.be patient for sooner you will be declared winner. i have also the same experieces as you have. i just wait my time to be declared winner.
