Bad Sportsmanship

could be childish, i'm just saying blocking is a simple way for people to not play with or hear smack talk from known bad sports.  so block me! ;)

The problem with blocking is you can only do it to on person at a time. With so many hundreds of thousands of players on Chess.com, it's unlikely that I would play the same person twice even if I didn't block them.

I don't mind if they play badly, that's just part of the learning curve, but I can't stand this constant trooling, useless threads, closed accounts, swearing, rude, childish behavior. The only way to have an intelligent conversation is to post at 2 and 3am, when the total online usage is lower.

If you think a thread is useless don't click on it. Or if you've already clicked on it then just ignore it and move on to something else. Simple.

To PhiloBeddo; INCORRECT. Most ofthe bad sportsmanship comes from the non-paying group. No significant revenue hit.

That's rather hypocritical coming from a Diamond member. No, seriously - I don't understand why so many people get Diamond. Platinum is almost exactly the same, and costs way less.

I was thinking it might be a good idea for every person to have a "sportsmanship" rating, which would be based on how your opponents rate you (on a scale from 1-10 for example). Then, the matchmaking system could try to pair players together with similar sportsmanship levels, so that the nice players could play against each other, and the people who spam, swear, stall unnecessarily, etc go against each other.

I'm not sure if this would work, since people might just give their opponents a low rating after losing to them, but I would appreciate anyone's opinion on this. Thanks.

That's an interesting idea. Good sportsmanship is just as important as winning the game.

I would support this idea.

"Good sportsmanship is just as importat as winning"? I respectfully disagree. Sportsmanship is always welcome, but in the top levels of games and sports, you will rarely find anybody who, at least privately, does not absolutely hate losing. Those who genuinely do not mind losing hardly ever reach the top. As for rating opponents on sportsmanship, as has been cautioned above, there is too much risk that losers would spitefully and dishonestly give poor ratings to opponents.

RG1951 has it right, it's too subjective and situational to have a complex ubiquitous rating system.  at best it would be just another distraction from the game, but my suggestion of blocking all meanies isn't a perfect solution either when it comes to tournament signups...
