Have you notice that two players being fairly well matched that as the gan\me progresses things tend to balance out, he/she as many pieces as you do. But in the strategy of the game, just as it seems your opponent is just about to do you in, you look around the board and find an opportunity to do him/her before he/she does you? It is kinda like the game balances its self.
